Towing with the mk. 2 cvt
« on: September 06, 2016, 07:01:59 PM »
Hi,
It would seem that the cvt is not suitable for towing but does anyone know why? The only thing I can think of is the torque converter isn't strong enough,

This has been asked before and several conclusions were drawn, most of which were transmission related, but also type approval testing not being worth the CVT's that would actually tow anything?
I was thinking about fitting one for a cycle rack, but didn't bother in the end.

Generally cars with auto boxes have the gearbox oil cooled by passing it through a chamber in the engine coolant radiator. This allows them to tow.
I don't think the Jazz has this facility hence it is not up to towing as the gearbox oil would overheat.

This may not be relevant - but the iShift (semi-Auto) is able to tow. I have a bar fitted to mine. So if you want a jazz, Auto second hand that can tow - it is the iShift.

The handbook, albeit for Mk 3 lists the towing weights as 450kg unbraked & 1000kg braked.
It makes no reference to the type of gearbox used, IE wether manual or auto.
I don't believe the CVT gearbox  is any different mechanically on the Mk3, just programmed differently to suit the new engine.
Obviously if I've got this wrong, someone will tell me.

The MK1 CVT certainly has gearbox coolant pipes at the base of the radiator just as you describe.

Presumably the 2011 and onwards facelift model that reintroduced the CVT has them as well, especially as it has a torque converter clutch.

Hi,
The torque converter is only utilised during the initial pulling away after which it locks up. I noticed when I was reversing over some rough ground that it laboured pulling away and had to be revved quite hard, I put this down to the torque converter. Pulling away is quite slow until the converter locks after which it bounds away,

Hi,
Just contacted honda for a definitive answer, no recommended towing weights therefore not suitable,

So, why does the Honda Jazz brochure list the towing weight as 1000kg with a braked trailer, regardless of whether the gearbox is manual or auto.
These figures are for negotiating  12% slope as per gov regulations.

I can only repeat the email from honda which says that the cvt is not suitable for towing,
