Audio silencer?

One of the reasons I wanted to replace my last car was to get back audio controls on the steering column.  I now find that I cannot instantly turn off  sound  without taking eye off road and hand off wheel and reaching for a tiny button on the dashboard display panel.  I  like to shut down distraction of radio etc if situation warrants it.

 OK the volume control is on the steering wheel but that is slow.  Also this control  can change position according to how the wheel is turned.  A previous car had a separate stick lever coming from the steering column like the indicator and light controls.

Last car was  Yaris bought in haste and with idea of teaching offspring to drive in.... previous one that had many refinements was Megane.

I am off section but I am surprised that a Mk3 doesn't have radio controls on the steering wheel as our EX Mk 2 does.

It does. What she is saying is the on/off button is still on the dash as in mark two's

I am getting better at tapping the 'off' button on the main screen.  Also I think I have increased the brightness of that display also and that helps.  I do like to have radio on and to switch easily between stations, and this can be done on the steering wheel along with the volume control.

Not sure if this is of any use, but after nearly four months I have found the mute button! If you tap the volume "ladder" on the right edge of the screen a larger version of the ladder opens and the mute button appears in the bottom right corner of the screen. To unmute just tap the ladder again. Still fiddly but I find it easier than trying to hit the on-off button.

does it have SVC (speed sensitive volume control) where you can choose to compensate for extra car noises as speed increases by automatically increase radio volume ?

Yes it does. Go to Home>settings>audio>sound and select volume compensation (SVC)
