Outside air temp sensor problems
« on: November 23, 2012, 04:57:35 PM »
Hi,

I recently bought a Jazz (07) and the outside air temperature has never displayed on the screen all the time I have owned it.
This has been bugging me, so I found the sensor and disconnected it and tested it with a multimeter and some heat. The sensor changed resistance so I conclude it works.
What can I try next?

Cheers

Rob

Do you have a circuit diagram/layout for it ::)?

No, do you know where I can find one?

I found this initially http://www.lingshondaparts.com/honda_car_parts_selection_pfk.php?block_01=17SAA601&block_02=B__6100&block_03=20726

When I followed the wires they join the main loom near the RH headlight.

OK, how many pins on the connector for the temp sensor?

Two, and the wires go straight into the main loom with no more visible connectors.

I'm guessing that it's probably a thermocouple type sensor?
However just to be sure disconnect the sensor and with the ignition on to active the instruments/display etc., use a multi meter to check between earth and each pin and between the two pins to see if there's a DC voltage present?
Just as a matter of interest, what is the temperature display showing?

You can also short together the wires that go into the sensor.  I found the difference in conductance (there is a diode inside the sensor) is very small when the sensor is cooled (immersed in some cold water) or warmed.

If you short it out, there should be an immediate change in the reading.  Then, you have a faulty sensor.  This is the type of component you can get from a breaker's yard and should cost a fraction of the price of a new one.
