Engine coolant level
« on: November 11, 2011, 05:19:25 AM »
Learner drivers need to do under the bonnet checks as part of the practical driving test. Included in these checks is a check on the engine coolant level. My cioolant level is quite low, so I'm thinking I should top it up a bit, however in my Astra, it seemed that no matter how much I coolant I put in it just spat out excess coolant and it returned to the low level again.

So how high is your coolant level?? I reckon mine is a quarter of the way between minimum and maximum. Also do you use Honda coolant or any motor factor coolant?? I'm inclined to go to Honda.

Thanks

Ozzie

Ozzie I would guess that you might need a new pressure cap.

I think the level has always been low, but its well up now so I will keep an eye on it, but theres no signs of leaks.

Most cars now run on 50% antifreeze / water mix all year round and this stops corrosion and also raises the boiling point of the coolant (the pressure cap also raises the boiling point).

Honda original coolant will last 10 years and then change every 5 years afterwards.  Always top up with either undiluted anti-freeze or 50% solution because otherwise the concentration of antifreeze will drop and could allow engine to freeze up.  If you want to be really careful use distilled (but not de-ionised water, which will attack metals) water to dilute the antifreeze as this wont have any calcium, chlorine, aluminium sulphate etc in it (which tap water will have).
Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot
