No Spare Wheel Supplied From New
« on: September 15, 2011, 12:32:14 PM »
I'm very disappointed that neither a full/temporary spare wheel was supplied as standard when I purchased my Jazz 1.4 EX Manual. The temporary repair system and associated air pump and aerosol fluid are almost impossible to use in practice, necessitating calling out the AA etc, and is only effective for very small punctures. Your tyre cannot be repaired as normal, so you end up having to buy a replacement at your Honda dealer. However, Honda would like you to purchase their own temporary spare wheel at an exorbitant £200 approx!

I believe its all to do with weigh saving.

For the £200 odd, you not only get the spare wheel but a complete "kit" but this will do away with the "extra" storage space in the boot well (the bit where you can lift the board up and have 3 different settings)

I too would prefer a spare tyre in the boot well, but if you think about it, I never actually had to use mine in any of my previous 4 cars I've own. i guess its more of a security thing in that you have a spare wheel in the boot but how often would we actually need it?

I had to use mind 3 times in 18 months  I spoke to honda when I bought the car , they said it was down to weight  a load rubbish its down to cost .I have a 1400 EX it cost me nearly £300 for tyres in 18 months due to unrepairable punctures.

Don't s'pose a proper wheel will fit under the load base?  Have a second set for winter tyres & was going to bung one of the summer tyre/wheels under there if it fits.  Can't try for myself as haven't got the car yet. :(

Yes.Even a 16inch standard alloy size wheel from an EX, complete with full size 185/55R16 tyre will fit in the wheel well ,leaving the boot floor flat. There is still room inside the wheel well for sundry tools etc.You will need the 79mm bolt and the two sided[fullsize and spacesaver] washer to retain the complete wheel.

I'm looking at getting an alloy spare wheel rather than a space saver, but by having a Hybrid, there is no wheel well in the boot, so I will store it in the boot just in case a pupil kerbs the wheel prior to a test which will cost me a lot more than the £200 cost of a wheel.

Troutfly,Were your £300 tyres 'unrepairable' due to your use of the gunk supplied with the car or was the puncture damage too severe?I now have a full size spare wheel for my EX Jazz as I am not sure that all the UK tyre stockists have the unusual size [185/55R16] in stock.

I asked for a SpacerSaver etc and got one free when I bought my second Jazz. (The first already had one!)
Regarding punctures, they're largely a thing of the past for me. I would never get a puncture repaired these days as there are only four footprint sized areas of contact to the road and I want them to be in the best possible condition.
I did pick up a screw in my front offside tyre a few months back. Tyre didn't deflate and I just got a new tyre fitted.

There is a business opportunity for someone to supply spare wheels and tyres to Jazz GE owners. Some time ago I was considering an Audi A2 but ruled it out due to the lack of spare tyre.

Although in 2009 I bought a Jazz ES which came with no spare or space saver, although I knew this before I bought I have never really been comfortable with not having a spare.

Two weeks after taking delivery of my previous car a new Peugeot 307 I had to have a new tyre fitted because a screw caused a puncture, at least I had a spare at the time.

I delayed for over a year before buying a space saver wheel for my Jazz last month. Price £153.76 inc. fitting.

Try as I could I couldn't forget the tyre on my last car, a Honda CRV, which exploded with a bang as I left the M23 going south. Earlier, on the M25, we'd driven over a small amount of shattered glass and I suppose had picked up a splinter which 50 miles or so later had worked its way through the tyre tread. No way would spray gunge (according to my computer's dictionary gunge is 'a sticky, viscous, and unpleasantly messy material') have been at all helpful.

Out of sight but not out of mind it's comforting to know that there's a spare wheel under the boot floor.
