1.2 v 1.4 is there much difference ?
« on: August 05, 2011, 10:52:05 PM »
Hi All , Is it worth spending the extra for a 1.4 against a 1.2 / I know it is a little easier on the fuel in a 1.2 but do you lose much in acceleration / Is the 1.4 a better driving car if using on motorway miles etc Is the 1.2 a more modern designed unit ?

Also any things to look out for in a early 2008 GE model / saw some issues around locking petrol caps that unlock themselves, anything else to look out for ? Thanks CoolminT

my 2012 model 1.2 is great on the motorway cruises well all day long, i didnt feel much difference when i tested the 1.4 (but you wont with 10hp difference)

what you got to ask yourself is rear electric windows electric folding mirrors and alloy wheels worth £1500 more?

2009 GE 1.2, 18000 miles... lots of motorway miles, much fully loaded with luggage and adult passengers, too. Cruises happily at 75mph all day long, readily prepared to use gears but it's no sweat whatsoever with the best 'feeling' gear change I have ever used, coupled with a light clutch.

1.2 (1198cc) is 90hp@6000 rpm/ 0-60mph=12.5 secs; max 110mph.
1.4 (1339cc) is 100hp@6000 rpm/ 0-60mph=11.5 secs; max 113mph.

If I remember rightly, torque (acceleration/'pulling' power uphill) is only about 10% difference, too. I don't know the more important (IMO) 50-70mph/overtaking times.

Hope this helps.

Recommend and buy another? Absolutely. Mine is a 1.2SE... aircon is 'a must' and I'm pleased I got it given the car's glasshouse. Unfortunately in Nov 2009 I couldn't successfully negotiate 'a/c without alloys' which must be more cost than steels... I understood it had to be 'S' (steels and no a/c) or 'SE' (alloys and a/c)... Milano red and studiously ignored all optional extras to minimise purchase price. For versatility, accommodation, ease of getting in and out, ease of driving, economy, reliability and resale values/depreciation it's hard to beat Jazz IMO. Its conservatively quirky styling has grown on me lots over time, too - particularly when viewed from certain angles. I feel the ride could be less restless, front seats more comfortable (but that's p'raps an individual thing)... however back seat accommodation and comfort is simply impressive given the car's exterior dimensions. All in all, coolmint, I'm a Jazz enthusiast and I didn't expect to be!

I have a 1.4 ES registered in October 2008, one of the first, and have had no problems after 24000 miles.  48 mpg overall.  I haven't driven a 1.2 so can't comment on this aspect, but I don't think I would want less torque - I like avoiding gear changes, and would have bought the CVT if it had been availble then.  I agree with IvyTek's comments about ride and front seat comfort, which are my main criticisms.

The 1.4 is actually a 1.35 as far as I am aware, so there isnt a massive difference.  I still went for the 1.4 because I carry about a lot of equipment.  Mine does well on motorways and feels responsive.  My friend has a 1.4 auto CVT and she complains it takes a while to "get going" but that may be just her.
