MPG improves when I put my foot down!
« on: June 28, 2011, 11:35:30 AM »
I've noticed this more than once. When I choose to drive my Jazz a bit faster fuel consumption improves!

It must be a VTEC thing. As engine oil pressure, speed, temperature and throttle position influence the cam switch-over point (I'm no expert, I just looked at explanations on YouTube so correct me if I'm wrong).

Question: Is there any way, other perhaps that engine noise, that you can tell when the cams change?

I have had suspicions that when driving my ES VTEC on the motorway that if I drive at close to 70 mph then consumption seems better than if I drive slower, but I have not really been able to prove it.

The 2012 EX model have higher gearing, ours at the legal limit is turning at a smiggen over 2k rpm, hence a reduced fuel consumption.

A light right foot and a thinking nut behind the wheel are key to fuel economy in my case.

I still miss my Subaru whoosh to 7krpm though
