Aircon Noise
« on: February 15, 2023, 04:40:26 PM »
My Mk3 Jazz makes a very audible noise when the aircon kicks in, especially noticeable when the bonnet is open.
Is this normal or should I be worried?
I can only describe the noise as a sort of ‘tinny’ clang. There is no noise when it’s running, only on start up.

There is normally some noise, because the aircon compressor is powered by the fan belt pulley.  (unless the mk3 is different to most other cars)   When the compressor is  off the fan belt pulley freewheels.  When the aircon is switched on  an electric clutch locks the pulley solid so the compressor is turned.  This makes a noise  but I cant say if your noise is normal or excessive. Probably normal.
Sometimes the pulley clutch can rattle a bit when the aircon is off.

the noise you hear is the air con clutch engaging, it's normal
