Sat Nav and Sound
« on: January 18, 2023, 08:48:48 AM »
Hello all. I'm used to having android auto playing through infotainment system, nothing on the 2014/2015 Jazz so I'm contemplating getting a Garmin. Can this be used connecting to car stereo?
Google maps on the phone is a bit of hit and miss so don't really want to rely on it.

I use TomTom Go on my phone and it is excellent. For about £15/annum subscription you get all the traffic and such.

My Garmin DS61 has no subscription and I get traffic (for life of the unit).

I use the PocketGPSWorld database which displays upcoming cameras before I get the Speedtrap Alert verbal warning.

Typical example from Garmin DS61 :

Traffic on right for whole journey split into red and yellow for severity.

Speed camera display showing speed.

But you had to pay for your DriveSmart 61. I pay for nothing other than the subscription and even that is not required if you don't want the traffic.

True, but I got mine a few years ago for another car without an Android head unit.

Have you checked the terms and conditions on line recently?   My garmin has ' for life' map  updates and when I bought it I vowed to live to 120 to get my moneys worth. ;D     But I've noticed over the years the definition changed to 'life of the unit' (fair enough) then to "  for the design  life of the unit   " This may be clarification of what they intended all along.  So if in their opinion  the unit has had a fair innings  ,or the technology is no longer updated or broadcast  they can pull the plug on support ,even if its still working perfectly.. They havnt done so yet for me.

These clauses are often used.

All I can say is it's still getting map updates, got the latest one only a week ago 2023.20

My even older Garmin 2599 also got the same update.

Unlike Arlo security cameras who wil be crippling older cameras Jan 2024 even though some were still available to purchase only 3 years ago.
