1992 Panasonic Car Stereo volume balance control problem
« on: October 14, 2020, 03:46:13 PM »
My 1992 Subaru came with a factory Panasonice radio cassette,
recently the RH speakers went almost silent.
I swopped over the LH speaker to RH still very very little sound form RH side.
Took the unit out opend it up to reveal [see photo in lower RH side] the volume control and has a balance control operated by pulling out the control knob.
Sprayed into top slits of the unit with Servisol Super10  operated the controls vol & bal, back into car & volume now around 10% of the LH speaker so some improvement .
Is it a case of repeat untill muck removed?

Hoping there maybe someone who knows about older car stereos.

That's what I would do. The first spay probably loosened the muck. The second might blow it out, especially if you use the red tube. If you have a multimeter, you can confirm it is the pot that is iffy. Take it the solder joints look okay. If you have an iron, you could always give them a spot.

I assume that when you say you swapped the speakers over, the fault moved to the other speaker.

Mucky pots are usually crackly when you rotate them, and it's unusual to only affect one side.

Definitely worth poking about for dry joints with the iron, as Jocko suggests. Maybe you disturbed something while fiddling with the pot?
