Title: Satnav woes
Post by: Saycol on July 07, 2022, 03:49:54 PM
I know there are many threads on Satnav performance but I am on holiday in Suffolk and it keeps sending me down single track roads just to cut the corner off a perfectly acceptable B road. When I put the same start/finish into Google maps on my phone it routes me entirely on the B road which is what you expect.

I have looked at Satnav settings but there seems no way to exclude single track roads. Can anyone help?

Thx

I take it this is the built in Garmin ?

Unfortunately the standalone Garmins often do that as well. I've had my standalone try to take me off a motorway, down the sliproad, up the sliproad, feeding me back on the same motorway where the motorway bends at a junction.

All I can suggest, if it's an option, is to ask it to offer more than one route and check them out. I know they have fastest and shortest.

I use Android Auto Google Maps for traffic and a more comprehensive database of places.

Kremmen

Thanks for the reply and yes I am talking about the built in Garmin.

If I use Apple Car Play (I have an iPhone) won’t that gobble up my data allowance?

I've no idea exactly how much data it uses as I've never got close to my 4Gb allowance.

Since my last monthly rollover I've driven about 120 miles and I still have 3.86Gb left.

That's not only Google Maps but also to my Garmin DS61 via Smartlink and to Speedtrap Alert app so I think it's minimal.

Edit: Found a link that reckons about 0.6Mb an hour which sounds about right.

My EX Garmin gives me grief like this.
In spite of “Off Road” being selected in “Avoidances” in settings, it still tried to make me turn off the lane I was on down a green track (twice!).

See Google map screenshot.

It’s a shame you have to exercise due vigilance with a system that doesn’t always get it right….I have no issues with downloaded Google maps on CarPlay.

Even TomTom falls victim to the same issue.

The older versions on android had a setting 'avoid single track roads' which was great... except they removed that on the apple version.

I don't know why, but it is a real pain when driving near Winchester as it takes you on miles and miles of single track roads (RDMS goes absolutely bonkers if you have it switched on) unless you manually pick A and B roads instead.

I didn't want to mention TT but I've seen similar reports.

If I'm using navigation for an unknown journey I try to investigate it first. I needed to go to an outer Bedford area from London a few years back and the roads it chose near the destination were bizarre. One was a single track with a ford.

Looking closer I just stayed on the B road for a mile or 2 as the 'diversion' ended up there anyway.

I did two separate new one hour trips today using Apple maps with the phone connected to the active USB socket. Worked perfectly, better information than the in built Garmin and used very little of my monthly data allowance. For me, certainly in rural areas, it is the way forward.

The current version was available circa 1st December 2021 and they get updated yearly.

Surely there is no difference between doing this or connecting your iphone via bluetooth to Apple maps on the car screen?

Correct. Would still work with Bluetooth but as I have a cable might as well use it and keep the phone charged.

Re data usage.  Hopefully this helps - I have a 100 GB per month allowance on my plan with EE.  I donate 10 GB (because im generous) to my wife.  im the only one in the household that uses Google Maps on a daily basis, so with my 90GB remaining, I have never used more than 5GB per month, and I think im a fairly big user.

So unless you have a teeny tiny data plan, it's not much to worry about.  Btw my data plan on EE is not at all expensive - it was a bit of a no brainer, as a tenth of the data was only a couple quid cheaper   ;)

Last Wednesday we were at the dealer to renew the insurance. Indeed, through the dealer who had a perfect offer and only € 7,- ( £ 6,-) more expensive than a year ago...
When the paperwork was completed, we were offered coffee, because the update of our navigation was not quite ready yet...
Navigation update? (https://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/smilie/konfus/a015.gif) We didn't ask for an update...
It seems that there are still dealers who write SERVICE in capital letters! (https://www.cheesebuerger.de/images/midi/froehlich/a023.gif)
