Title: Honda Jazz 07 reg CVT auto - occasional jump when accelerating, whining noise
Post by: ahmjt on March 20, 2023, 10:06:28 AM
Hi all,
First post here. I drive a 2007 Jazz petrol CVT 1.4 (mileage 170k). Issue 1: I have been experiencing occasional jump (at around 2000 rpm) when trying to accelerate.  When it happens, it will continue to happen 4-5 times. Issue 2: recently I can hear a whining noise when I change gear from to D or R. At N or P the engine is nice and quite. the noise starts when the gear is moved to D/R. Hard to describe the noise but seems like coming from something turning. When I slow down the fast 'whish-whoosh' sound slower. Don't know how to describe it. Took to my trusted garage and they mentioned to take it to a auto transmission specialist as they don't work with autos. Called an auto specialist garage and described as above. Garage told me the CVT had to be changed with a quote of 2600 + vat. The car's value is at best mid 500 - so I need to understand what to do. Some online search suggest transmission fluid flush (last one happened in 2018). Another suggestion is to use Xado 120 after fluid change. Another suggestion is driveshaft change. I am having difficulty finding a garage. I don't know if the two problems are linked. Really appreciate your help.

Almost 5 years since a fluid change (how many miles?). I would start there.

In 2017 it was approx. 120k, now 170k, so roughly 50k.

After calling several independent garages (near Dartford, Bexley etc.), booked a Honda dealer for CVT fluid change. Will update after it is done.

Went to see the local Honda dealer service centre for CVT oil change. They had a look and said the car needed a new gearbox. I guess this is the end of this car for me (feeling sad).

An independent transmission specialist place has quoted me 2600 + vat for replacement. Not sure if I should look for a new car (2600 will not get me much) or a install a replacement gearbox...dilemma!

With two separate opinions that it needs major work  I'd think twice about throwing good money after bad on a car that age and mileage.  If the problem is 'occasional'   and is safe to drive  on local roads  maybe tolerate it until the next MOT?  It might fail on other stuff and the gearbox work effectively wasted.  At least geta second opinion about the cars remaining life expectancy before carrying out expensive work.   You could try a quick fix of cvt oil change and maybe additive, if its not too expensive.  You might be lucky and it works   or you could just be wasting more money.

If you are adventurous and like to think outside the box consider looking  for a similar car for sale  that has good engine and gearbox but is very cheap  because its an mot failure or has some body damage. You may be able to make one good car out of two.  Swopping over the engine/ gearbox as one 'lump' may be considerably cheaper than complex gearbox work  and may be something your trusted garage are able to do.   Also you, or they, may be able to sell some other bits from the donor car to recoup some or all of the costs.  .  Sometimes you find the donor car is better in some way than yours and you end up renovating that one instead   ;D    Just an idea.
