Hi everyone,

We own a Mk2 2011 Jazz IMA Hybrid that recently developed the battery cooling fan problem described in another thread on this forum. Thanks to this thread, I was able to diagnose the issue and had the fan replaced with a new original Honda part at a specialist garage for Hybrid vehicles.

Since then, we have had intermittent problems with our 12V battery. On some days, particularly when it is warm and we have the AC on, the red battery warning light intermittently comes on. The light stays on for 10s to 15s, then turns off again for 10s or so, and keeps switching on and off in a very regular cycle.

We booked our car in for a diagnosis in our regular garage, but they were not able to look at it before a short international trip that we already had scheduled. As luck would have it, the day of this trip was particularly hot (34C) and we ended up stuck by the side of the road in Germany, presumably with a dead 12V battery (most electrical systems stopped functioning, including windows, power steering and abs).

The car has since been transported back to the Netherlands. Upon arrival the car appeared to be working normally, with no faults on the dashboard or on our OBD scanner. Today, the garage completed their diagnosis, and also was not able to find any faults. Their best guess is to replace the 12V battery as a pre-cautionary measure, which we will go ahead and do (we do not know how old this battery is).

Has anyone here heard of similar issues? Is the 12V battery indeed the most likely culprit, or should we be looking at the  alternator? Again, there are no OBD error codes, so we are in the dark, so to speak.

Any insights would be most appreciated!

Interesting, you need to find a local electrical diagnostic company, maybe the one the used car garages use.
It really needs a diagnostic check before spending any money on parts.
These days faults are stored permanent and current within the data for the Jazz.
Once ID completed then proceed .
The other place to look maybe the USA website fitfreak.net .

You could buy a diagnostic tool and have a look for yourself? They are not massively expensive.

Thanks for the responses! I decided to go ahead with the 12V battery replacement since it is likely 4+ years old. We do a lot of short city drives, which apparently reduces the life time of the battery.

I will report back to let you know whether the fault returns post battery replacement. If the fault does return, we will look into getting a better ODB reader.

Do clean all terminals including earth to chassis. Corrosion gives apparent battery issues.

Hi JW, I had the same issue recently, see later posts in https://clubjazz.org/forum/index.php?PHPSESSID=36afa4c8a90f19ae62d642ba7e2df87f&topic=12622.15

Do you hear the hybrid fan blowing loudly on hot days in the trunk?

It sounds like they replaced the fan with a Honda CRZ fan, which fits perfectly but rotates in opposite direction. As a result there's is no air moved through your hybrid battery and DC to DC converter. As a failsafe the converter reduces power output when overheating which triggers the battery light to come on since voltage drops below 12v. I bought a sigaret lighter USB charger with voltage indicator to see what happened.

I used the video link in the other thread and opened up the whole system. Then when I removed the fan outlet duct I noticed the way the fan blades are rotated doesn't make sense. Quick check of the part number on the fan with Honda revealed the issue.
