I would say a Jazz is more refined than a Toyota and more versatile, Toyota's tend to be cramped in the back, the rear doors don't open very wide, the body panels are thin and "tinny", Hondas drivetrain is more refined partly due to more soundproofing, I had a Yaris Cross which was noisy, both wind/ road noise and a very gruff sounding engine, a continuous drone into the cabin. The Toyota hybrid drivetrain is very reliable and they have a good warranty period, your mate will have to drive a Corolla to come to a decision

I ultimately decided between a Jazz and a Yaris just by inspecting the cars and sitting in both it in the showrooms.    Other research  and a test drive also important , although even travelling in the car as a passenger is better than nothing.

Many people get a bit stressed buying a car, dealing with pushy sales staff etc. Especially if they are a bit shy or uncomfortable  asking forthright questions or assimilating a barrage of information.   Its often a good idea when buying a car to take a friend along as moral support , a witness to whats being said . Also a dispassionate friend might spot the cars disadvantages and ask more questions than an excited buyer viewing the car through rose coloured spectacles.

Why not offer to go along with your friend to view both  .Once the pair of you establish a good rapport   with the sales staff  your friend may  feel more comfortable  arranging a test drive etc. If you also take along your driving licence  they might insure both of you to drive it. Or if your friend is nervous of driving a strange new car you could do the test drive yourself giving independent live feedback to them in the passenger seat .  Once a choice and decision to buy is made  your friend may prefer  to negotiate  a deal and finance in private.  (It wont be your fault if the wrong choice is made  ;) ;D )
If you are both good actors  and can convince the salesperson you are less keen on the purchase going ahead you might  get  a better deal to secure the sale. But they are aware of such tactics  ;D

The Corolla has many virtues and is a solid choice. Huge mpg, I know an owner that sees near 70 with gentle use. They are however considerably smaller inside than even our MK2 Jazz. No spare wheel. Tiny boot. Rear seats? Mind your head on the grab handles they are right next to your head. Great cars, but like all cars, comprimised in some areas.

I have hired a car for a day to have a decent trial beyond the 30 mins or so dealers offer and the faff of the showroom visit. Cheaper to spend £50 daily rental of a Corolla than buying the wrong car!

I don't think anyone has ever bought a Jazz and regretted it. They are all round brilliant in my clearly biased opinion!  ;D ;D

On recent models Toyota offer 100,000 mile warrantry which after 3 years can be extended by 1year or 10,000 miles upto 10 years , 100k provided a toyota dealer carries out the service. Arguably maybe a similar cost to honda extended 3 or 2 year warrantry as honda has longer distance service intervals of 12,500 compared to toyota 10,000.  The jazz offers excellent rear accomodation and also honda unique magic seats .

It is a personal preference, but I think the Honda ehev system is more refined than the Toyota hybrid system. Only when cruising at 70 mph and above the Toyota might win economy wise.

Jazz seems a class smaller than the Corolla from the outside, but inner space is much more in the Jazz.

Thank you all for replies, he has decided to go for a jazz main reason being
his grandson showed him on his laptop that it stated that the transmission
on Honda was more superior than Toyota he also knew that there was more
leg room in back of jazz than my previous car a Vauxhall insignia.

Wise choice, the Jazz engine/ transmission is certainly more refined than the Toyota

As ive owned both H and T hybrids at the same time, I can tell you there are advantages and disadvantages to both. I marginally prefer the Honda set up, but the Toyota has the benefit of slightly better fuel economy, and being able to force the engine into EV mode, and there are times this is useful. Generally the Honda set up feels 'plusher'.  For me as I said, tho, not much in it

I've owned a Toyota Corolla Hybrid for three months. I can't comment about the M4 Jazz as I have only sat inside one. The Corolla is of course one size up from the Jazz, with all the pros and cons that brings. On that basis I would think the Corolla would ride better and feel more refined.

The biggest gripe is the interior storage, for which my old Mk1 Jazz was better in that respect. The boot and rear space is small by class standards but that is less of a concern for me. The Jazz was never an option for me, partly because dealers were asking the same if not more for newly new examples. My shortlisted cars were the Mazda3, Kia Proceed/Xceed and Corolla. The Civic by the way was too expensive.

Yes, the Corolla (Hatchback) is bigger than the Jazz. About 28 cm. longer and about 6.5 cm. wider. The wheelbase is also 12 cm. more.
Then you would also expect more interior space, but....
Unfortunately, there is no more interior space, apart from a somewhat larger boot.
People also often think that Toyota hybrids are (a bit) more economical than the Honda Jazz. In case of the Yaris (NOT the Yaris Cross!) this is true, but for the Corolla, even the most economical, the 1.8 hatchback, this is not the case in everyday life. Here is the Jazz winner by a small margin, according to Spritmonitor:

Corolla: https://www.spritmonitor.de/de/uebersicht/49-Toyota/1734-Corolla_Hybrid.html?fueltype=2&constyear_s=2019&constyear_e=2024&power_s=120&power_e=142&minkm=10000&gearing=3&exactmodel=HB&powerunit=2

Jazz: https://www.spritmonitor.de/de/uebersicht/18-Honda/1293-Jazz_Hybrid.html?vehicletype=1&constyear_s=2019&constyear_e=2024&power_s=75&power_e=91&minkm=10000&gearing=3

In short, I think JB's pal (or his grandson ) made a good choice
If nothing goes right, go left!
