suspension comfort improvement
« on: November 07, 2021, 11:32:48 AM »
Hello all helpers,
I live in a city where the roads are full of pot-holes - and it's an uncomforable ride. Can I improve this by using particular tyres? Is there a way of softening the suspension so my Jazz runs like an old Oldsmobile?
On this forum I've been told not to deflate the tyres a bit!
Thanks for help on this.

What size tyres at present & year of manufacture would help.

I am interested in the answer too. I can tell you what not to get, having made a mistake on my Mk2. I wrote this in an earlier thread.

"On my Mk2 I switched to Dunlop Fast Response when my Michelin Energy Savers wore out.

Big mistake. The stiffer sidewall made the cabin noticeably noisier and "thumpier", even though the noise rating of the Dunlops is very good. I think it is assessed for tread noise impact on the local environment, not cabin comfort"

My Mk3 is coming up for new tyres and ride and noise are high on my priorities. I know now to avoid anything with terms like "Fast Response".

I replaced my front energy-savers with Primacy 4 and have driven about 7000 miles on them so far.  I haven’t noticed any difference in noise or comfort.  Noise depends very much on road surface, with new asphalt being noticeably quieter.

My Honda Jazz is 2018, Sport, Navi ivtec cv 5dr.
Current tyres are Dunlop SP ~Sport 2030 185/55/R16.
Are these not recommended for comfort?
John.

I don't know John. What I know is the Dunlop ones I tried (over 5 years ago now) had "Fast Response" in the name, like these do:

https://www.dunlop.eu/en_gb/consumer/tires/sp_sport_fastresponse.SPTFASTRES.html

"Stiff shoulder" and "excellent road feedback" may be very good characteristics to have, but I suspect not the most comfortable. It's all a compromise.

So, anywhere in the UK then  :(

I ride a 1955 motorcycle that has quite primitive undamped 'plunger' rear suspension. I need to try and spot the holes in the road to avoid having my spinal vertibrae rearranged.

Me too. I think the car behind thinks I'm a drunk. Some guy was stopped by the cops for doing that - they suspected he was over the limit. I wonder how much longer our leaders will make us put up with the worst roads in Western Europe...

The factory mounted Dunlop Sport tyres are not the worst ones, but I'm sure there are some better ones. However, the main issue is the tyre size. For better, or at least less bad comfort on potholes, the way to go is to have more dampening air between the rim and the ground. Instead of 185/55R16 tyres you could get 15" rims and 185/65R16 tyres. They are slightly bigger in diameter than your original ones but nothing to be any issue. I have that size winter tyres in my Jazz to get slightly (about 6 mm) more ground clearance. You could even go to 175/70R15, which is actually the factory fitted tyre size on Mk3 Jazz/Fit in some markets.

I imagine that the tyre type and size are significant in fuel consumption

Especially the type affects the fuel consumption. Difference between the above mentioned sizes is neglectable from fuel consumption point of view.

Thanks all for your views. I checked in to 'comfort' tyres and came up with the following:

Michelin Cross Climate Pilot Super Sport (!)
Goodyear Vector Four Seasons
Continental DWS
Pirelli Scorpion Verde all Seasons (!)

Anybody tried any of these?
Thanks, John.

First one is confusing, since as far as I know Michelin Crossclimate and Pilot Sport are two different tyres. Crossclimate is all season tyre and Pilot Sport is summer only. For all season Crossclimate is good solution. For summer I'd rather go to Primacy 4 or Energy Saver+, because Pilot Sport is marketed as high performance tyre, which seldom correlates with comfort.
