Finally a message from Garmin re map updates, as follows:

"Dear Customer,
...... Unfortunately, I get offered City Navigator Europe 2023 on Garmin Express at a cost of £21 which I don't think is any improvement on what I've got loaded at the moment!  Looks like the end of the road for map updates on my 2017 Jazz.

I find using my Android (Sony Xperia XA2) Smart Phone and Waze app works. (other apps available) and constantly updated.
Managed to use Bluetooth to enable audio instructions to play though the infotainment system and car speakers.
Downside ~ physically attaching phone to dash / screen - Yet to try suggestions made elsewhere on this forum.

I'm also being offered 2024.11 but I don't see the point as I've never used the built in mapping as without any traffic info it's useless in comparison to Google Maps
Let's be careful out there !

spoke to Garmin this week for an update , a helpful guy , Leo , looked into the situation again.

He confirmed that , depending on model and year ie. which head unit , updates are no longer available because there is not enough room in the unit's memory and there is not likely to be a fix.

My 2018 is one of them but , like others have mentioned , Google Maps is much better so not too bothered.

On the Garmin standalone units the 'replace' the maps each time

From posts I've seen they just 'add' to what's already there hence why the MyMaps shows all downloaded years
Let's be careful out there !

I'm quite disappointed since I like the Garmin navigation on the big infotainment screen.  For my typical journeys, traffic info is not particularly critical so I've never felt the lack of it.  I tried Google maps on my smartphone in a previous non-satnav Toyota but could never find a convenient place to position the phone, let alone the tangle of an extra wire if I needed to plug it in. I guess I will soldier on with 2023 mapping until it leads me seriously astray!

I have twice updated my Garmin sat nav using the standard procedure of USB stick in the Jazz,  plug into the homePC,  download update from the Garmin site and then put USB stick back into Jazz to transfer the update.

This year I got a message on the sat nav that an update was available.   I went through the procedure,  but on connection to the Garmin site I got a message that my sat nav was up to date,  so no download of new mapping.

Now I know from this forum that a 2024 update is available,  so I cannot believe that the sat nav is actually up to date.   I emailed Garmin customer service but they were not particularly helpful  - suggesting simply that I contact my Honda dealer.

The car was in for its annual service this week so I asked the dealer to have a look at the sat nav and the short answer was that they cannot update it.

My Jazz is a 2018,  so I wonder if it is the same reason mentioned by some other forum members that there is not enough memory in the nav unit for the new update.   As the car will never be driven in Europe I would be quite happy if I could get a UK only update if that would fit into the existing memory space.

Failing that I just keep using the sat nav as is,  but with diminishing accuracy each year

That's a shame - I thought the memory issue would have been fixed in 2018 models. Back in January 2024, I was able to download the 2024 mapping from Garmin before the capacity issue was discovered and it was only at the second part of the update procedure that the headunit on my 2017 Jazz gave me the message about inadequate storage.  Now, you don't even get to download the 2024 maps.  However you can still get some idea of the storage available, I think.  The first part of the update process will generate a XML file on your 16GB USB stick, which you should be able to read with a text editor.  Scroll down to near the end and you can find a reading of the available storage.  If it looks like the numbers published round about Reply 17 in this thread, it's likely you have inadequate memory for 2024 mapping.  It's very frustrating - like you I could manage with UK-only maps but that isn't an option provided by Garmin.

I think this is really embarassing for Honda,  in less than 6 years the unit is out of date... I have no words.
Anyway, I would try creating a .img map file from openstreeetmap with only the UK data,  and copying it inside the pendrive  (the original must be erased, the new must have the same name).
Maybe it works...

DEFINITIVE ANSWER FROM GARMIN

Further to the issue about limited memory space for updates,  I emailed Garmin to ask if they could make available a UK only version of the update,  as this would fit the available memory (although at the cost of losing the European mapping)

The reply from Garmin is quoted below

Thank you for your email.
We have checked on our end and the last version available for your device is City Navigator Europe NTU 2023.10. Could you please tell us if you already have them installed?
Due to the fact that is a quite old one and there is a limited internal memory, other updates won't be available.
We are really sorry to give you this information but we cannot do anything more, I'm afraid.

So that looks like the end of the road.   My Jazz was first registered October 2018,  so I would think that any Jazz prior to that date,  and perhaps some younger cars,  will have the same problem.

It is really annoying.  I would be happy to pay for annual updates,  and I would have thought it commercially viable for Garmin to provide them  - a captive market of thousands of cars stretching years into the future

Jazz built  from mid 2024 now have  satnav  mapping data from HERE.com  not Garmin.  The Honda handbook says  these will be updated at least once a year for 14 years from the date of manufacture. We shall see.
Updates are only free for 8 years  , Years 8 -14 requires payment.    So its still the case that eventually drivers of older cars will be expected to get lost  ;D (or use their smart phones  )

Honda say the navigation system uses  some open source data. The English language  assistance voice sounds like  the same British "Aggie the sat Naggie"  as was used on the Garmin,  but the directions given  are more detailed.

Possibly Garmin may have tried harder to fix the Mk3 Jazz problem if they hadn't been replaced as a supplier of satnavs to Honda.  As it is, several thousand Honda owners with their navigation equipment descending into premature obsolescence may be a source of quiet satisfaction.
