Honda jazz (2004) fuel gauge always reading full
« on: August 08, 2019, 02:59:09 PM »
My fuel gauge is reading full even though i know the tank is definately NOT full....

As a bit of background, I recently had my catalytic converter stolen off the car (a common problem with Honda Jazz i hear) and so had to get it replaced along with the lambda sensors connected to it.

Since then, whenver i have driven it, the fuel tank reads as Full even though I have now done about 120 miles. As a precaution I tried to fill up with petrol, but after putting in less than 10 litres I got the click, telling me the tank was full.

Googling the problem, it seems that as the pointer is moving off the empty it's not going to be be a simple fuse problem .

Maybe the sending unit? If so is  does anyone know if this something that can be accessed from inside the car, or is under tha car?

Any other suggestions on what it could be .... ?

My 2006 Jazz never moves off full until after about 120 miles.

I wonder if the scrotes who nicked your cat also cut the wire from the fuel sender. I hope not it could be awkward to get to.

Or is it? What do you think?

The sender unit is under the centre console, and is accessed by removing it. You may also have to remove the handbrake lever and possibly the front passenger seat so you can see what you are doing.

You might want to get underneath and have a good look at the wiring around the tank. I have a feeling that the rear lambda sensor is in the same bunch of loom as the fuel tank sender, so it is very possible that the sender wiring was damaged when your cat was stolen.

Thanks for these tips.
Had a look underneath and couldn't see any obvious damage to wires etc.

Found the sending unit where you said.
when I unplug it the gauge goes to zero.
plug it back in and it goes ba k up to full,

Thia makes me think maybe there is an error in the actual sensor.

Am going to take it out go from there.

Any other suggestions or thoughts welcome as tjhe above was really helpful!

It sounds like you have a jammed or faulty sender unit, or there is a short circuit in the pump/sender assembly somewhere. Take it out and make sure everything is moving that should be.

If you can't see any obvious issues, I might be tempted to replace the pump/sender unit with a good secondhand one, just to save time. It will either fix it, or rule out the sender - crossed fingers that the problem isn't in the dash electronics.
