green moss on boot lip
« on: August 17, 2021, 06:38:10 PM »
has anyone else got this, green growth covering (not moss) in the gutter behind the roof when you open the boot between the roof and the boot seal

i got rid of it once with autoglym but it is back now and i dont want to keep polishing it as the factory paint looks thin in this area

apart from a wet rag what do people suggest and how did you tackle the problem and keep it from returning if possible?

it probably is because my car is white it shows up worse than a darker colour would

thanks

It's a problem that can occur on any car where rain washes pollen onto an area that can become warm. Typical areas are shut lines, window seals and panel gaps.

Detailers often use a detailing brush with an All Purpose Cleaner (APC) to access those hard to reach areas and gently clean away any deposits.

You didn't say, but I suspect you're using Auto Glym Super Resin Polish? Most 'polishes' contain some abrasives which is why they claim to clean and protect.

Once clean, try using a sealant on those areas as this help prevent build up. It won't eradicate the issue but should cut down the frequency of cleaning.

Try a wipe over with vinegar, then dry  follow up with any polish you like.

Cillit Bang Black Mould killer will do the job.
Leave for 5 minutes then wash off.

No...just no...

Vinegar is acidic, so you're just asking for problems.

That sort of stuff maybe fine for the lower end 'hand car washes' which seem to give instant good results, and they do to the casual eye - but not for long...

In over 5 years I’ld never noticed the accumulation of muck in this gutter until prompted to look by this thread.  As it doesn’t bother me and seems to be harmless, I’m going back to not noticing it again!

The trouble with 'not noticing it' is it gradually forms a kind of felt and will hold water, never good especially around the hatch hinges.
I agree with previous comments, use a brush with APC and once clean add a sealant, even something like Sonax BSD.. If you clean it as often as your door shuts it should stay pristine.

+1 for the detailer brush. Just remember to do it on each wash, and the moss wont have time to grow!

I use a trigger spray of shampoo and water to direct the liquid to the right spot.

i just used a wet rag and it came up clean again, it comes down from the roof rail channels i would hate to see what is under there

car manufactures should do away with the plastic strips as they are rust traps and i have seen cars with a fully painted roof and no rails and it looks a lot better

Since reading this thread I’ve been noticing the muck every time I open the boot.  There was quite a lot (see picture) but it came off easily with warm water, a splash of cleaner from under the sink and a brush.  That’ll do for another 5 years!
