Like the bazillion scientists (of their day) who swore the world is flat?
Apparently it is not true that it was generally accepted that the world was flat. Simple observation shows that it is not.

Correct. It's been known by the Ancient Greeks that the earth was a sphere. The flat earth movement can be dated back to the 20th century.

A better analogy would be the Aether hypothesis or the miasma theory of disease.

Yes Eratosthenes had established the circumference  of the Earth to a high degree of accuracy by about 250BC -200BC.
Mind boggling.

What is more important now is to convince politicians of the implications of global warming.

Just to add a little depth to the discussion:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flat_Earth

then we we can move on to the Earth being the centre of the Universe perhaps?

Round, square or a flat, circular world  sitting on the back of four elephants, which stand on the back of a giant star turtle, it's going to be toast unless the politicians  start listening to the scientists pdq.

Don't panic - it's just nature doing it's thing.

It will all balance out in the end....

What a pity you missed the Terry Pratchett reference.
