How is MK3 Jazz for Motorway Driving Compared to MK2?
« on: May 23, 2021, 07:20:11 PM »
I currently have a 2012 one which was a rather decent upgrade over the 2003 mk1 one I had in past, however still I don't think the car is really suited for motorway driving ( the Revs are quite high/fuel consumption is worse than for my 2.2d accord at those speeds and it just doesn't feels  good/relaxing to drive at higher speeds)

I'm possibly looking at 2018-2020 model ,first impression was that it felt like a bigger car than a MK2 + obviously it has 6 gears.

Those who have had both MK2 and MK3 , how do they compare for motorway driving?
Is there no difference, small difference or large difference?

We've had all first 3 generations in the family and currently have the MK3. I would say MK2 and MK3 are very similar in terms of motorway driving. I find the MK3 a slightly better feeling car in terms of the feedback you get but it is more susceptible to crosswinds at high speeds. None of the Jazz's are grand tourers and the high revving nature of the Honda engine coupled with the poor sound insulation makes it a little tiring on long journeys. That being said, it's not unbearable, and is something you do get used to. We went with the 1.5 Sport and with the slightly more powerful engine it makes motorway driving a bit easier.

Fuel consumption isn't bad and I would say MK2 and 3 are about the same for the same size engine. We hardly noticed any increase in fuel consumption going from a 1.4 MK1 to the 1.5 MK3.

I had a manual Mk 2 (2008-2016) and a CVT Mk 3, and the motorway revs are much lower with the CVT, so I find it a more relaxing drive.  I think the CVT is excellent, and I would have chosen it for the Mk 2 if it had been available in 2008.  I’ve averaged 52 mpg (56 indicated) over 43000 miles in the Mk 3, roughly 8% better than the manual Mk 2, including a fair proportion of motorway/dual carriageway driving at a true 60-65 mph.

Can't speak for the manual Mk3 but my CVT does about 2500 rpm at 70. My Mk 2 would do 3,500 at the same speed so I find the Mk3 CVT a much more relaxed motorway drive.

Fully agree with peteo48, the CVT Mk3 gives a very relaxed drive on motorways, the Mk4 is even better🤠

Thanks for the info. Wow, that is a big difference in revs. 2500, barely ticking over which will make it a lot more relaxed than our MK2 which is 'busy' at 70.  :D

What does the engine sounds like and how does the car feels at those speeds?

My Mark 1 Jazz Started to Feel Terrible and very tiring at speeds over 55mph
My Mark 2 Jazz Engine Starts to really roar over 60mph and the drive is very tiring due to noise/engine roar , I drive 70mph with it only when in a hurry and end up drained after driving at those speeds for a long time with it..

Something like Audi a6 still feels perfect at even 80-90mph and you don't feel tired at all.

No offence but there must have been something far wrong with your Mk 1 if it felt terrible over 55 mph.
And as for the Audi A6! Twice the price and built for a different purpose entirely.

This afternoon I have driven around 25 miles on dual carriageway with the cruise control set at 70 (true 66).  Revs under 2500 except for upward slopes, and the dominant noise relates to tyre/road surface combination, not the engine.  Very relaxing, and fuel consumption showing over 60 mpg (true 55?). NB the car has cvt.

My Mk 1 is the same.

Yes - exactly right. I do an indicated 70 and the revs are 2500 rpm or less. The Jazz feels really comfortable on the motorway for a small car.
