My son was told by a senior engineer at one of the main car manufacturers that electric vehicle batteries are made from the same cells that are used in mobile phones. I was surprised at first but it's obvious really that they would use them as they are already manufactured in vast numbers.

The senior engineer meant that both use Lithium-ion cells, used in a huge number of devices.

Yes, its my understanding that the majority of EV batteries, are made up from 100s, possibly 1000s, of 18650 cells all linked in a series/parallel formation.
18650 is the designation, from a battery, 18mm diameter x 65mm long, nominally 3.7volts.

Understanding from what? Seems highly unlikely to me. It would be very inefficient for one thing, all that wasted space and extra weight compared to larger batteries that pack more densely.

18650s are the "cylindrical cells" that the article refers to. One of the recycling photos, captioned "A technician in Germany makes sure a burned lithium-ion battery is discharged before further recycling", shows them.

Hmm, well it seems Tesla did use that format, although they’re not like the normals ones we can buy and I have in my running head torch.
