CVT Fluid Change
« on: January 08, 2017, 11:07:20 AM »
My car is overdue for CVT fluid change. Is it difficult task that needs to be done with Honda dealer only or it can be done by local garage also?

It's not difficult with the right facilities, there is a drain plug and a refill point with dipstick.
You should only use the Honda fluid called I believe, CVT-F, and drain, refill, run the car selecting all the functions and then drain and refill again. You will need twice the amount of oil specified for the capacity of the gearbox.
Do a search on here, there is loads of info on CVT oil changing.

Honda main dealers charge £70 for CVT fluid change, if you go that route.

ATF-DW1 is recommended for Honda automatic transmission models.

A CVT  is not like a 'normal' automatic transmission and requires the use of Honda CVT-F not an ATF.
I have queried this with my local Honda dealer and was told that the fluid for a CVT box is CVT-F and nothing else.
I have no idea what the subtle differences are between the two types but I do know what I would use and have used in the past.

For €1 / litre more than the ebay ad you have the right CVT fluid for your car.

http://www.coxmotorparts.co.uk/genuine-honda-cvt-fluid-4ltr-p-996.html

Very quick and good service from Cox! I ordered our Jazz stuff from them as they have better prices than here in the Netherlands. ;)

edit: of course i bought MTF for our iShift. ;)

Honda main dealers charge £70 for CVT fluid change, if you go that route.

I'm not sure they change the oil completely for that price. It costs more than £70 to buy enough oil to fill the transmission. How on earth can they make money if they're doing it properly?

Honda CVT fluid in above post link is €38.40 for 4 litres! I think that's enough to change it twice.

I think the capacity is 5.4L, though I may be wrong. I've definitely seen 5.4L quoted in another thread:

A drain only releases around 2.5 litres. capacity is double that..approx.
Honda's schedule cannot be a full drain.. That requires drain once, refill 2.5litres. Drive 15 minutes. drain again. Refill. That is more like £150+ worth of work..

Honda may put a suction tube into transmission and draw all the fluid out that way. That is how you do it on a transmission with no drain plug.

Don't forget gearbox flush is different from gearbox oil change.  Flush £150;  Oil change £80 and check the magnetic plug for metallic debris
