I know this is only meant as a guide but I find it very pessimistic ....
It was reading 0 miles to empty but I could only fit 36 litres in, meaning there was probably 50 miles left?

its just giving you warning that fuel is low - and when fuel light flashes there is about 6 to 7 litres in tank, rather have that than be warned seconds before the engine cuts out at night on a rainy motorway. Some people are very good at watching fuel gauge and topping up tank, but some are not, also in some countries garages are far apart - every car maker has to build cars for the world now, you will probably find most cars are same now with early warning.
as far as second half of tank going down fast, the full to half full indication on gauge is actually half a tank (21 litres) but the second half is not half but 21 minus 7 litres as the car considers tank to be empty when it gets down to 7 litres, this is why 'last 100 miles goes down quick'.

I've driven 50miles when the computer said 0 and even then, i could only manage 37 litres (I believe our tank is 42)

I've never used the "miles to empty" thingy. Always run to 300ish miles and then fill up again!
Even then, I rarely put more than 32 litres in. At the flashing light it's about the same! ;D

What would you do if you relied on the reading and ran out of fuel?
To prevent the inevitable lawsuits, it is pessimistic...

I agree - one instance where pessimism is a good thing although I often wonder how much use this gizmo is because it runs down very quickly once you are at 100 miles to go.
You have always got the refuel warning light as a back up.

This subject is an old Jazz chestnut.
The probable reason that the Jazz low fuel warning is so pessimistic is because the tank is below the front seats and hence is flat and shallow.
It is very difficult to make a fuel level sensor accurate with such a narrow band to work in. It's not impossible but would be much more expensive.

I have been forced to drive 72km after the fuel read 0 since the filling station I intended to stop at was closed on a public holiday. When I did fill up, 47 litres went in, showing 3 litres left. This would be about 40km

I remember Chrisc saying his wife had bought a Civic, maybe he was driving that :) which does have a 50 litre tank
