Title: Battery replacement
Post by: coolmint on September 18, 2019, 07:07:51 AM
Hi looking to replace battery on 2002 jazz , looking to go for a Bosch 054 battery / 40 AH, there are 2 different ones I'm looking at on euro car parts . One has hold downs , one has not . The 02 jazz does not require one with hold downs however the cheaper one has hold downs . Does any know does the battery area have enough space to accommodate a battery with hold downs . ? Thanks

Go for Yuasa HSB154 Silver.

+1. great battery - keeps its charge for ages when not used.... got them on both our cars,

Much cheaper here with free UK delivery

For future reference for me or anyone else that may buy the car I always write the date fitted on top of battery with a permanent marker, easy on the silver Yuasa casing, but may need to use light coloured tape on a black battery ( unless you have a white or yellow permanent marker ).

I fitted a silver Yuasa YBX5054 to a 2012 Jazz from here for £45.90 delivered. Great battery. I would advise a charge before fitting though. Took a few hours on a smart charger.  Comes with terminal adapters for Japanese or Euro posts.

How come that battery only gets a 4 year warranty when the identical one from Halfords and other places gets a 5 year ?  Is it a knock-off of a Yuasa battery ?

It is a different battery. See model number.

Same number as battery from MBS I linked to with 5 year warranty, Halfrauds use their own battery number for YBX5054.  The 54 bit is the international battery council number for case size and post position.  The cranking amps and reserve can vary depending on chemistry and number of plates, that is why they are shown separately.

Perhaps Halfords offer the 5 year warranty where as Yuasa offers 4.

About the hold downs. I noticed Eurocarparts recommended either hold downs or not for my Jazz 2008 Mk1 GE3, so that suggests there is space. The battery in mine doesn't have hold downs but there is probably enough space.

I'd be tempt to go for the Yuasa, especially with the very good deals people here have found.

When the RAC man fitted my new battery, which had the hold downs (only type he had on van), he had to do a bit of modification to get it to fit.

Decided it was battery replacement time -

https://www.tayna.co.uk/car-batteries/yuasa/ybx5054/

From Tayna battery £50 + £8 delivery ( if you order more than one battery they reduce the shipping cost )  – ignore the ‘standard posts’ on the spec ( meaning SAE posts ) it is supplied with Japanese posts ( small posts ) and a pair of split lead alloy bushings that adapt Japanese posts to larger SAE post clamps.  The Jazz normally has JIS Japanese post clamps,  but this battery cover both sizes.

Got a YBX5053 50 A/h battery for the Civic at same time – and they charged total of £8 shipping for both – so really only £4 per battery. Will need to use the split adaptors on the Civic which has SAE clamps – but I had to do that anyway on the last Yuasa Silver battery I fitted 5 years ago.

From Halfords £89  (+ £15 for fitting )

Both batteries come with full 5 year warranty from Tayna,  only ordered them Sunday and arrived 12 noon today by DHL..

I used Tayna batteries the last time I bought one (Bosch I think), I was impressed by the service and the price, I would use them again.

As regards your battery clamps/tie down , a trip down to your ocal breakers is best place to get another one.

No need. The mod suits the battery on the car and would also work perfectly with the battery fitted originally.
