Air Conditioning Compressor Failure
« on: September 02, 2016, 01:16:41 PM »
The AC has become temperamental, some days its fine, on others its OK for 10 minutes and then it blows warm humid air, so I have sent it in to the main dealer and had the dreaded call where they inform me that its the compressor that has failed and to replace it is £1368 !

I called a local motor factor who can do one for £370, but it seems I still need a coil pack (Honda £170) and I still need to find out the fitting cost (Honda main dealer £200) . . . . . . . or do I drop the window???

I can't understand what a coil pack has got to do with an aircon fault.
£370 for an aircon compressor if that is the problem, presumably it's a recon one but that's not a bad price plus fitting presumably.
If you drive with your windows open you will find that it's not as efficient as aircon. The car will be warmer, noisier and use a lot more fuel because of the disturbed airflow over the car.

Evidently the air con compressor clutch coil pack is a fused link that controls the compressor (so the main dealer tells me). Honda part no. 38924RBJ006

Thanks for that Ozzie, I was naturally thinking of spark plugs.

Clutched compresors seem quite unusual these days - my daughter was here the other day with her Jazz and I guess the engine fan must also cut in an out with the clutch as the roar was verging on alarming and it was cutting in and out every few seconds.

Jazz is in to a local garage for the new brake pads and discs that were an issue on the MOT, and I mentioned the air con issue. The garage said they would get the part from the place that I quoted but said the compressor clutch coil was part of the compressor and would not be an additional part, so they are now working out a price for labour and sundries. Fingers crossed we come in under £500 !

Is it true that hybrid A/C is different to standard A/C?

The basic principles of how aircon works are the same across the board.
It is possible that in a hybrid system the aircon may be turned off or reduced if the car is running on battery alone, if that is possible.

The independent local garage that I went to for the brakes, aren't convinced its the compressor that is at fault, as it blows cold for around 20 minutes. Their theory is if the compressor is broken it doesn't blow cold at all.

I don't think the hybrid Jazz has a totally different set-up to the standard Jazz, although its a different compressor.

I have now been on to Honda UK and asked them if hey have a dealer that specialises is air conditioning, apparently the answer is "No". They suggest trying another dealer for a second opinion, which I said is fine, but its costing me time off work and £50 a time for someone else, who is not a specialist to look at it, and lets face it the first opinion appears to be wrong, and Honda UK agree that it probably isn't the compressor thats at fault.

So I have called another Honda dealer, and mentioned it all to them and they suggest, book it in, and they will have a look at it, however they have offered to waive the inspection fee, so fair play to Norton Way Honda of Letchworth. I will report back next week after their inspection.

Honda UK have got back to me and they think its the Compressor Coil Clutch that may be the problem, but need to put it through a few tests and want the technicians to call Honda UK on Tuesday and put them through to the technicians there who run a "Tess Track". Things are looking a bit more positive that we are getting to the bottom of this.

So we have got to the bottom of it !

Norton Way Honda have found that the clutch on the compressor is worn out, and they have shown me photos to confirm. The part is on back order and won't be available till February ! Once it is available it will cost £585 once fitted. If I go for a non-Honda compressor that comes with the clutch included its £600 fitted, so although they have come to a different fault identified, the result is the same.

Windows down it is then !

Ebay has a few from £50 to £250, but its £200 fitting charge too, so I will make do with it being tempremental at the moment. I had the AC on on the 60 minute drive down to Letchworth and of course it was working fine, but then the air temp was only 19 degrees.

So the aircon is the first expensive problem and you haven't reached 200k miles!

Yep its the first problem.

Ironically they did a "health check" and noticed a sidelight was out, so thats the second bulb that has gone in 5 years ! Honda are going to get an email  :o

If it was a major part that had gone rather than the air conditioning I wouldn't hesitate to get it sorted but as its a "luxury" thats playing up, I am reluctant to pay up. The Service Advisor said maybe its time to consider changing it? "Why, its still going fine, OK the air con doesn't always work, but the windows open".

Personal situation has changed a bit, so I am working more hours, so I need to get the air con sorted. Its going in to a local highly recommended garage tomorrow, new compressor (non-Honda), fit and re-gas, £637 all in, and I can walk back home too.
