Mot failure - Help needed
« on: September 04, 2022, 10:54:24 AM »
Good morning.

My jazz failed big time on its brakes last week. Brake pipes all round need replacing and near side rear brake disc, and anti roll bar offside front replace.

Are there any mechanics in the group that could give me a ball park figure on replacing this.

I cant comment on costs, even ball park.  . It can depend whether you mean the metal brake pipes are corroded or just the flexible rubber ones.
With a single brake disc its usually better to replace both sides  (and their pads)  to ensure its balanced,
Also they would probably need to investigate why it only happened on one side. It could be that one of the brake callipers is sticking and needs overhaul  or replacement. Another job where its better to do both sides at the same time.    But thats a matter for their judgment. Maybe they can be cleaned up, but sometimes it works out cheaper fitting new parts than spending time cleaning up old ones.

Sorry if its bad news.  Slightly on the plus side, having to do these things together   rather than individually over the next couple of years    can save some duplication of work, such as bleeding the brake lines and calipers Also there is less  risk of complications such as seized threads etc.
Roll bar replacement is normally relatively cheap, as long a you are happy to have pattern parts.

Find a local Honda independent garage & ask for their opinion.
Any previous MOT advisory comments on brake pipes

Really surprised that it failed on brake pipes as the majority of the lines on a Jazz are plastic coated. The only line that is a common failure on the Jazz is the uncoated line that runs from a position on the rear "axle" to the drivers side rear brake, and most cars over a certain age will have had a new length of line jointed in by now. Easy to do.

Thanks for all your advice. It transpired that when I went to another 2 garages to check half the items weren’t an mot failure. Think the first garage tried to make money seeing as it an old car. Shame ild been going there for years. When I looked at the brake lines under the car at the 3rd garage they were all in good condition. It did need a new bulb and drop link. But hey ho better that’ll changing loads of unnecessary items.

Anyway jazz back on road. I’m happy and back on the road.

I can recommend reading the official MOT testers manual.   It gives a lot of information  about what can fail and what cant.   And you dont really need to be mechanically minded to understand most of it .(although I doubt my wife would find it good bedtime reading   ;) )

https://www.gov.uk/guidance/mot-inspection-manual-for-private-passenger-and-light-commercial-vehicles

Only problem is some  things are subjective. Although there is guidance its the testers opinion of what wear and tear, rust etc  is acceptable and what is not.   For this reason  it can be a good idea to have the mot done at a local authority garage (someone also mentioned having theirs  done at an ambulance station garage)    They normally charge the full mot fee  which helps pay for  having   plenty of experienced mechanics for their normal work. But  unlike  general garages offering discounted mot's its not a loss leader for more repair work.

My son-in-law sends all their HGVs to a specialist garage and he gets my car MOT'd there too. They know he will be doing the work so they don't pack out the report. The MOT before last it needed the aforementioned two rear brake pipes replaced so he just told them to do it, as they have all the fittings to hand, and they just stick it on his account. I then settle up with him.

So my (our) little 2005SE lives to see another year. £400 worth of work required on brakes and suspension bits and pieces. But to be fair, some of that is fair wear and tear, and some of it isn't fair - mainly due to the state of the roads around here, the fact this Jazz is working as a tiler's van often carrying heavy loads, and the nature of some of the roads/tracks where his more rural customers live.

However, £400 to keep this 140,000+ miler on the road for up to another year seems like a good deal to me, given it was 'written off' by the insurer after a front end collision last year!
