Newbie seeks advice regarding noise when driving
« on: January 25, 2025, 08:14:34 PM »
Hi, As the title says, I'm new here and must apologise straight away for asking what might be a daft question and for seeking urgent advice without much time to search and research!

My wife's old jalopy died yesterday and I've been given the option on this 2021 HONDA JAZZ SE I-MMD
CVT.  It's done 68k miles with 50k in the past year ... but it's a good price from a 'private dealer' seller.  It appears to be in good condition, but it sounds quite noisy in the cabin when travelling at urban speeds and as it's the first Jazz I've looked at, I can make no comparisons.

I guess I'm sounding a bit naive, but I have been around the block a few times (age-wise as well as driving) so know I'm not being taken in (famous last words!), it's just that I'm used to quiet large cars and need to know if this little gem is different from similar others. The engine/generator and road gear seem fine, so, are these just a particularly road-and-wind noisy car?  If the CVT's dodgy, what kind of noise might that make?  What basic checks can I make to be sure all's well, please?

Thanks for reading ... any advice or guidance gratefully received.

The Jazz ehev is a very quiet car. At low speeds the engine might spin up to charge the battery and/or to produce heat. This happens at around 2.000 rpm which might seem a bit high when you are moving at urban speeds. But it will only last a short time.

Also, the car will produce a sound when driving at low speeds; this is mandatory for all electrified vehicles.

The cvt is not something you can hear, since it does not have a mechanical cvt.

I would recommend to drive in a Honda dealer Jazz first to have some comparison. Personally I would never buy such a new car from a private seller. Did you notice the brake simulator issue topic already? That’s why.

I do hope I'm not too late to jump in!

Please! Pretty please! Go to your Honda dealership of choice and test drive any new Jazz!

Unless you are prone to flooring it the e:HEV Jazz is an extremely low noise, enjoyable and fuel efficient car in urban traffic! (I'm truly sorry about the many !)
As Marco1979 has pointed out already: At startup, especially in the cold and the heating turned up, the Jazz's ICE will churn at quite elevated revs compared to a "normal" car. This is all as it is designed to be: The e:HEV system always runs the ICE at the most favorable revs for the current load condition/situation absolutely independent of actual speed.

Please do test drive a new Jazz to get a comparison before buying this second hand car.
You may find out that just maybe - depending on your main driving profile - a full-hybrid may not be your best pick after all.

Don't spend 1p untill this Jazz checked via vehicle score .co.uk or similar
7 out of 10 used cars have a story these days.
If in doubt walk away.
