Front and rear windscreen washers not working
« on: November 08, 2024, 07:34:19 PM »
Hello all,

This is my first post on this forum. We have a 2013 1.4 EX and recently both our front and rear windscreen washers have stopped working at the same time. I can't hear any noise when operating the wiper and washer stalk either (the wipers still work though).
Did someone have this issue in the past? What's the cause behind it?
Is it an easy fix or how much does it cost to fix at a mechanic?

Thank you for your help.

Front and rear washers typically use the same  pump usually located under the washer bottle. For front washers  the pump runs forwards.  For rear washers the  rear washer switch supplies power with the electrical polarity reversed  and the same pump runs backwards ,pumping to the rear of the car through a one way valve.   As far as I can see there is just one fuse  protecting both of these electrical circuits.  ( I think it is a  15amp fuse ,number 21, but check this on the drivers handbook.)
So first check would be to see if this fuse has blown . If it has blown try replacing it. You might be lucky and it now works.   But the problem might have been the pump was under excess load because of some sort of blockage  such as dirt, scum etc  in the washer bottle   , so also  try and flush the bottle out with a  garden hose etc.

If the fuse blows again immediately or soon after   there may be a fault or short circuit in either of the two switches, or their wiring, or the pump itself.   This would need more detailed  investigation to establish the source of the problem, and possibly replacement parts.  If you are unable to do this yourself the cost would depend on how much labour  or which parts are required.   Its a job where owning a  multimeter would be a great help in diagnostics.  If you are willing to undertake diy repairs its worth buying one.  (from about £8)
My IQ test came back negative

How clever! I've never thought about single pump - two destinations.
LV, Thanks for the lesson!!

If you can see the pump try tapping it with plastic or wood.
Any signs of mice or rodents in your garage parking space that's another common issue resulting in wire loom chewing.
First off view the water container and pump location then the electrical connection.
Take each stage before going down route of buying or replacing parts

Good evening all,
I know it's been a while and apologies for not updating the forum.
In the end, it turned out to be a malfunctioning washer pump. Replaced by an indie garage for £115 (£75 for the pump, £35 for the labour).
Unfortunately the bill at the mechanic turned out to be quite high as they found the off side front road spring and anti-roll bar link needed replacing too...
Thanks for the help!
