Get a "lavalier" microphone

I am using this one:

Sony ECM-LV1 Wired Lavalier Microphone

and its great - actually has a stereo double mic so if you position it sideways you will have a stereo outpoot if 2 people are speaking - its pretty dope and not that expensive

I have just fitted my radio today and I will literally give a nobel prize to anyone who knows what key tolerance needs to be set to have the buttons remapped - I really want a "pause" button instead of source change.

I have just fitted a Joying unit. No real problems. I can confirm the oem microphone will not work so the supplied mic has to be fitted on the sun visor or similar.
DAB radio signal from the oem airial was picked using a  https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/276627334516 SMA to SMB adaptor and a dab of Araldite. Good reception so far!!!

Ah you managed to just glue the OEM Honda connector onto this one? That's interesting!

Just a question for you/anyone else who has fitted the unit and using the external microphone, what's your audio quality like during phone calls?

I may have mounted mine incorrectly as I have placed it just below the steering wheel rather than the usual a-pillar spot and the interference is terrible.

Wondering whether it's my mounting location or the microphone. I wanted it out of the way and on a previous car I did use the a-pillar but the sun visor always kept hitting it. Maybe you have to use that spot for a reason...
I fitted my microphone in the centre behind the mirror with no reception problems.

Ok well I relocated the microphone and it isn't much better. Now I realised you actually used a different mic to the default Joying one. Looking on YouTube apparently the default mic is not great, so that would explain it. Perhaps a better quality one is in order after all.

I'd forgotten I already had my Alpine microphone fitted from the previous headunit, I'm sure you could pick up a branded microphone quite easily online, they are nearly all compatible.

Yes, I think it's a job for the summer. Don't fancy routing the wires while it is constantly raining outside!  ;D

Otherwise, all is working well. I find the unit doesn't like it if we have more than one mobile connecting to it wirelessly, so my wife has wireless Carplay and I have to make do with using a cable to avoid connection issues next time.

It arrived today, and it was fitted within 2 hours.
I used everything in the box, microphone, gps unit and I also plugged in the 4g unit in case I ever need it.

All set up to automatically use nova launcher on startup. Internet radio setup via automatic hotspot on my mobile.

GPS signal is really good, the supplied microphone is as good as the original Honda one. I put mine just under the headlining.
The GPS unit is fitted under under where the rain sensor is etc.

The only problem I encountered was that bloody tight screw right underneath. In the end I used a 8mm socket to undo it. And it was also a bit confusing at first figuring out which of those small square connectors went, and realizing I had to unplug the airbag light and just wire it back up and shove it behind the radio.  ;D

But I'm well chuffed with it. Feels so modern now, not even bothered with car play/ android auto as it's pretty pointless. Everything is easier straight on the head unit. I can even skip radio internet channels from steering wheel etc.

You didn't need to fit a GPS antenna  as all cars, whether factory SatNav or not have one already and the cable is hidden in the dash, just need an adapter.

I did have a search about but couldn't find anything so just gave up and run the one supplied  :)

Has anyone tried one of those reversing cameras which are integrated into the number plate lights, im very tempted to fit one.

Would be interesting to know what apps you have on the head unit and find useful.

I disabled car play as it's just annoying. Much easier to just use it as a tablet.

I have:

Nova launcher so that horrendous standard joying thing is gone

Woweather as a widget
Tunein radio over internet and again as a widget.
Waze
Google maps
Gemini AI
YouTube
Deezer
Spotify
Google Earth
YouTube music
Amazon music
McDonald's  ;D (grandkids)

I also got a cheap data sim so it saves waiting for it to connect to my mobile hotspot.

I think you'll find most people are just using their phones and don't change anything on the HU. It also makes sense if you buy a smaller memory capacity HU as your phone does all the work so no need to spend more.

If you go about installing apps on the HU, you'll have to keep an eye on storage and memory. Plus app updates on top.

I would have thought Carplay/Android is the best solution?

I find it faster than carplay.
I just prefer using the head unit, it seems to make more sense to me. Can still skip radio channels and everything via the steering wheel controls. Make and take calls etc via Bluetooth.
As it's basically an android tablet everything updates itself, and tbh there is loads of storage space left memory wise.

Anyhow I added some images if anyone is interested. And if anyone is wondering if they should buy or not, it's a definite yes.
And don't worry that address in the weather widget isn't near my house  :o

Looking at your pictures, the right hand bottom edge of your surround is not pushed fully home as it is not flush, the clip is likely not engaged. On the two units I have fitted it was necessary to shave a tiny amount of plastic from the dash opening to get the bottom RH clip to engage fully.

As regards CarPlay or not, they both have their advantages and disadvantages, I too have a SIM in my headunit & sometimes use that but principally use the HU for route guidance and music and not really interested in other Apps as I am too busy concentrating on driving!

I do find that the map presentation for Google/Waze or Apple Maps is much clearer on CarPlay.
