New clutch
« on: July 12, 2020, 07:00:06 AM »
Hi all, looking to see what others have paid a garage labour cost to fit a new clutch on a 1400 jazz year 2004, I was looking to get a Borg & Beck clutch kit.

Clutch specialists have the process off to a tee and can have them swapped in no time, so they can often give the most competitive quotes. As said above, costs vary depending upon whereabouts in the country you are, but I would expect to pay around £150-£200 plus parts.

One thing about Borg & Beck - the brand in the UK is owned by Firstline, a supplier of generic factor parts. Personally, I would prefer to go for a proven manufacturer such LuK, Sachs or Valeo.

I would always buy Borg and Beck as they were made in my local town along with Lockheed. I now for a fact that they did a lot of R&D.

Unfortunately, the company that now uses the Borg & Beck brand now has nothing whatsoever to do with the old Automotive Products (AP) company in Leamington Spa, which is long gone. FirstLine Ltd., who bought only the rights to use the name in the UK, are a importer of budget motor factor parts, based in Banbury, Oxfordshire.

It's such a major job to get to the clutch, if you intend keeping the car, I think it's worth fitting a clutch with a good reputation. My personal preference is for LuK, actually still made from scratch here on the outskirts of Sheffield, rather than one from Eastern Europe.

I've fitted borg & beck brake pads and discs on my 2003 jazz, they were very good. To the point that when I sold it, the buyer (a workmate) has commented, unprompted, on how good they still are now a few years later. However I'd still go for a LUK clutch to be on the safe side due to the complexity and cost of fitting.

I think the B&B clutch is about 20 quid cheaper, but I think I would still go for the LuK. If you want cheap, you might as well fit a National clutch, they are a tenner cheaper still.

It's a strange thing, a factor branded clutch. When you open them up, it's not unusual to find a LuK or Valeo friction plate, whatever the OEM was for the car, and a third party manufactured cover plate and release bearing. There seems to be a limited number of suppliers of the clutch friction for some cars, but it's the other bits that worry me - it's a lot of work to fit parts of unknown origin.

I've fitted borg & beck brake pads and discs on my 2003 jazz, they were very good.

I've fitted a few Borg & Beck bits, and lots of FirstLine bits before that, without any problems... and they are cheap, I think it cost me about £16 for a L&R pair of droplinks for the old Jazz. I fitted one, and no problems so far - but if they are easy to replace if they do fail.

They seem just as good as any other factor parts, and probably far better than the no-name rubbish you find on ebay, but they're not Delphi or Blueprint.

When i firs bought my car it was on 98k miles and had clutch slippage so I needed to get the clutch replaced. I went somewhere dodgey and cheap and spent £200 on part and labour combined. I dont know what type of clutch they used. I am on 130k miles now and so far the clutch hasn't caused me problems.

What are the main pro's and con's for the different clutches? Is it just wear and tear and durability? Or is there a difference in performance?
