Getting a used mk4, what to look for?
« on: December 04, 2025, 07:59:58 PM »
Hey all,
Finally managed to get rid of my old car and will be looking at getting an EX mk4 this weekend!
What do you guys think I shall look for? I believe there might be some issues with the driver seat sides cracking, but the rest should be alright.

Any thoughts about anything?

Ask if the brake simulator switch was checked/replaced (models before 2023)!

I have a 72 plate EX, and the seat sides are fine after 35k

Ask if the side mirror motors have been replaced, check the bottom of the windscreen to make sure it isn't de-laminating and as mentioned, ask about the brake simulator (have a look at the VIN number. MS NS and PS are the series affected. Mine is a PS, and as yet has not been recalled for a refit).

Some buyers might still  consider a used  mk4 with some seat side splitting if the car is otherwise good, and the price reduced sufficiently  (or repair included  in the price)  Maybe even the difference between owning an 'honest' mk4 or a  mk3  thats 'scrubbed up well.' for similar money    ;D
My IQ test came back negative

I would go for one of the newer Advance models (ie the refresh ones from late 2023) rather than an EX, I think they have resolved some of the issues which came up on the earlier models

I'd love to, but 14k is already a stretch.

Yup! That's my plan!

delaminating windscreen, well that's a new one. Got a picture with that by any chance?

No, although I thought I had posted a picture somewhere on the forum.. but I cannot now find it.
There was a batch of EX models that it happened to, I know this because a mechanic at my dealers told me they had seen others. It started from the bottom, and appears as a grey fogging type of discolouration.

I suppose the picture is on this older thread.

Any common rattles on your Mk4 chaps? Tomorrow is the big day.

If you had posted last week my neighbour had to give up driving and sold his
mk3 jazz, it was a 66reg some special under-treatment done by Honda when
he brought it new, 35000 miles better than showroom condition Honda service
history, I'm sure if anyone had seen it who was looking for a mk4 could not
have said no to it, went like clicking your fingers for £5,800 I didn't get chance to
put something on here about it.
I forgot what I came to forget.

Honda actually warn you in the handbook that ,because the car is normally so quiet or completely silent when stationary , you may notice  some  quiet background  systems  which are typically present in all cars  but usually drowned out by engine noise on 'normal' cars. Such as  air conditioning /heater fans etc.  Some owners can hear the small fan under the rear seat that regulates HV battery temperature, but I've never noticed it.

The only rattle I can recall being mentioned a few times on the forum is a slight rattle that appears to originate from within the infotainment screen. Not sure anyone found a cure.   I had it a few times on my 2021 EX. Usually it was silent but occasionally rattled  for a short time. It was inconsistent. Sometimes it would occur for no apparent reason on a smooth road, but might  remain silent on a  rough road.     Not had it on my 2024 car.

JB.  The Mk 4 is a different 'kettle of fish ' to the mk3.   The mk3 may be a great car and some may prefer to remain with familiar  older technology .  But those attracted to the silence, fuel economy ,fantastic low end torque and ease of driving  of the hybrid technology  would not necessarily consider a mk 3 as an alternative. Its not like choosing between an immaculate mk2 rather than  a high mileage mk3 for the same price . IMO.

Thank you, my previous car was lexus ct which is also hybrid so I am a strange to just hearing the fans or the squeaky brakes at low speeds.

Check for wiring damage in the engine bay ! My insurance paid £2800 to replace the engine bay wiring loom . Most of it is hidden ….!!

I've seen a couple of Jazz-es last weekend. One was 21 plate and the other 20 plate. I'll start with the first:
- driver side seat ripped
- left nozzle barely working
- 3 different tyres. On the front, it had a yokohama and a LingLong on the other side. I couldn't believe my eyes. Multicarbrand car dealer with 4.8 on google reviews. In the online pictures, only one tyre was pictured closely, the yokohama one.
- rear right side suspension squeaky on bumps
- "full honda service on phone". On arrival at the premises, the last service was done by the multicar dealer.

The next car was much better, 400 quid extra for an 1 year older (compared to the first) car + an extra 5000 miles but taken care and sold by Honda.

In the end, I noticed this on the upper right side of the engine. I thought that someone has done something to the wiring loom but it was exactly the same when I went to the second car. Both of them exactly 12months apart.

Well.. I have a Jazz now  :D
