Difficulties in changing wiper blades
« on: March 24, 2023, 04:07:30 PM »
I changed my rear wiper blades recently, without any difficulties. I've now tried to change the front passenger side blade, but cannot remove the old wiper blade. There is a kind of tab that can be pushed (upwards), but it is still impossible to "slide" the blade out. I'm worried that if I use too much force, it will break. Should a lot of force really be required? Or am I doing something wrong? Changing the rear wiper did not involve any form of violence!

It looks like it should just slide off, but it doesn't shift and I'm worried about breaking it. Should I need to really force it?

Spray a little lubricant on it. Just ensure you don't get any on the glass and clean it off the arm before fitting the new blade.

Double check  you are pushing in any securing lugs  correctly ,fully and effectively.  It might need a bit of gentle force as there is  fine line between  secure fixing and ease of fitting but  it shouldnt need  to be excessive.   Avoid  putting plastic parts under stress in very cold weather when they are more inclined to break.

I have applied silicon spray. Should I force the actual wiper blade into a 90 degree angle against the holding arm? I could maybe do that, if I pushed hard enough, but I worry if the is the wrong thing to do, I may breaks the mechanism.

Hi

The mechanism is on the wiper blade not the wiper arm

You pull up the locking tab which opens the space to slide the wiper blade out as you did on the rear wiper blade. It requires the same level of force to remove from as to remove rear

Fitting new wiper blade is reversal of removing wiper blade

Many thanks

John

I always hinge the blade to as near 90 degrees as I can without using any force. Remember, the arm is steel and the plastic blade is getting thrown away anyway. Personally, I wouldn't worry about damaging the old blade.

Just a tip. If you remove the plastic blade and have the bare steel arm lifted away from the screen, it can spring back down onto the glass and potentially cause grief.
Put a folded towel or something similar on the screen where the arm could land, just in case .......

A couple of times I have just replaced the rubber cut to length, which is cheaper then buying new blades and quite easy to do.
