Title: Should I wax my white perleasant Jazz??
Post by: Beachball on June 01, 2022, 04:25:42 PM
Had my Jazz for almost 3 weeks now and apart from a few changes to various settings,im very pleased with it.
With previous cars,I usually wash thoroughly, chamois dry and polish with Auto Glym.
Now I have this Jazz finished in White Pearlescent (I believe it contains small crystals).
Would anyone recommend that I also apply a coat of wax after polishing to this particular type of paint, and if so,any recommendations as to which wax please.
I dont want to ruin it.
Many thanks.

I would suggest something like Meguiars Ultimate Waterless Wash.

Not to be used as a 'waterless' wash but for use after a normal wash. It removes any water spots and leaves a nice wax slippy coat.

I've been using waterless wash products post wash for years and I think they work better than dedicated waxes.

I agree with Kremmen. These spray waxes and quick detailers are excellent these days and easy to apply. This means you can whip round with one of them after every wash. It does an extra bit of cleaning and adds a bit of protection. The rain always beads on my car so I'm happy with this approach.

There's a whole world of difference between cleaning and 'detailing' a car.

If you want to understand the difference I would have a look at 'Detailing World'.
https://www.detailingworld.co.uk/forum/index.php

Waxes and sealants are basically an LSP - Last Step Product - and are applied as the name suggests.

Polishes are exactly that; they usually contain micro abrasives and Auto Glym Super Resin Polish does exactly that.

Preparation of the paint and essentially the clear coat on top of the paint before applying the LSP is the key to achieving a good finish.

Oh, and ditch the chamois. All they do is scratch the car by moving all the contaminants around. Far better to use a drying towel and pat the surface dry.

It all depends on how far you want to go, and I refer you back to my first sentence.

Good luck.

Thanks for all the helpful replies.
I think I may try the waterless spray wax (after the car has been washed and polished)and see what happens.
Good advice also re;the chamois....will keep that in mind.
I did quickly browse the "detailing" link and found it very interesting.

I think the points Badger makes are relevant but I guess a lot depends on whether you want to make cleaning your car a hobby in its own right. That's when you would go down the detailing route. Detailing hobbyists positively enjoy cleaning and pampering their cars. They will also spend significant sums of money on equipment and products. Such is the enthusiasm they have for detailing they will often volunteer to clean friends and neighbours cars and their interest in different products will often see them stripping off one product (say a wax or sealant) and trying another. It can get expensive.

The other end of the spectrum is not the sponge and chamois brigade but those who put the car through an automatic car wash or use a roadside hand wash site.

There is a middle way, however, and that involves taking some advice from the detailers and using a wash mitt as opposed to a sponge and a microfibre drying towel instead of a chamois. You may choose to use two buckets, one with shampoo and one with clean water to rinse out the mitt from time to time.

I put myself in this category.

Thank you Peteo.
Yes,I think I fall into the middle category.
Its a case of time and money but certainly wouldnt dream of using a third party to wash my cars.
I want mine and the wifes Jazzes to both look nice and to help protect them from the elements.

There is a fourth category. Those who don't bother to wash their car at all. I fell into that category for a long time. I would wipe my lights and number plates with a damp cloth, and that was that. Some don't even do that much.

I too was once a sponge and chamois cleaner until I bought my Mk4 last year and having spent the most I have ever spent on a car decided to make the effort and do it properly,  and now am part of the middle band of cleaners. I realised over the years with my previous car how scratched it had become and so decided that won't happen again. This forum has been invaluable to me for this and many other topics,  and I'm so glad I found it.

I'm convinced that, unless you drive up farm tracks regularly, you reach a level of dirt that then remains constant. I'm fascinated by our neighbour's Mercedes 180 estate. It's been washed once in about 2 years. It now looks a slightly matt blue. You wouldn't even know it hardly ever gets washed.

My problem is I'm a bit obsessive. It might not look dirty but I know the dirt is there! :o :o

I had a green Carlton

and when I was working in Greenock I used to trawl back and forth from Fife, four days out of every eight. The car was never washed and got to the stage of not getting any dirtier. I think the colour makes a big difference as to when that point is reached. The only problem was, every time you closed the boot you had to wash your hands!

Ahhh....the Carlton Jocko. :D

I used to have a "B"reg estate many years ago for towing our caravan.

Lovely motor.

It was lovely. Automatic and rear-wheel drive. It is no wonder BMW stick with rear-wheel drive. Such a beautiful driving experience.

I have used Turtle Wax teflon polish on most of my cars followed by Gloss Guard.

I had White, a dark blue and a light blue metallic blue Carlton MK2, several Cavalier MK1 & Mk2 models including a SRi 130 all were great cars. The Cavalier SRi was the most fun to drive but not as much fun as the Alfa 156 twin spark I had later.

The Jazz Mk 4 is also a great car to drive.

I also recommend Gloss Guard after a polish for a long lasting shine and subsequent easy washing.

Seriously consider getting a drying towel, so much better than a chamois leather, and some small microfibre towels for around the door shuts and wheels.

In my experience polishing or waxing is a waste of time now these new spray products are available, just dry the car then spray and buff off with that Megiaurs spray or something like Gyeon wet coat, or turtle Wax ceramic spray wax.
So quick and easy, lovely and glossy and lasts longer than old polish.

FWIW, I use a soft brush and Autoglym shampoo for wetting and shifting most dirt from my cars/bikes. I have a Muc-off brush (the big one here https://www.sportsbikeshop.co.uk/motorcycle_parts/content_prod/102083 )    which has long soft filaments, it holds a fair amount of water and has a nice rubber body. In theory it won't cause scratches from moving the dirt particles and they get flushed away with the water.

I use Autoglym resin polish occasionally, but more recently I've switched to Autoglym Rapid Aqua wax (from a recommendation on this forum) and have to say it is so easy and effective to use I rarely use the resin polish now. The aqua wax comes with a couple of good quality microfibre cloths. I use one to apply the wax and wash it after each use, the other I use dry to buff the wax and wash it if it shows any dirt.

Except for the One Series which is now front wheel drive.

My driving style, it doesn't matter which are the drive wheels. Can't tell the difference.

Nice not to have the high lump down the centre of the car though. Front wheel drive is safer in icy conditions as well. I remember the back end trying to breakaway on a few occasions on black ice.

I traded in a new style One series to buy my Jazz. I discovered that it is actually a Mini Cooper S with a different body.
