Clicking noise
« on: June 22, 2017, 06:19:48 PM »
Evening all.

Noticed a new noise from my Jazz which I assume is going to end up costing me money.

When I change gear to reverse, after finding the biting point and increasing the revs, there is a loud audible click from under the car, and it sounds like it's located more towards the nearside.

This only really happens when starting to reverse (e.g. reversing off the road on to the driveway), and only happens the once.  It seems to be when the engine has picked up the load.

Any thoughts?

Does the same noise happen when you go forward after reversing ? If so could be a lower engine / gearbox mounting where rubber has failed and is allowing movement.

Haven't managed to replicate it moving forward from reverse, but can keep trying.

Vic,

About a year ago, had the middle section replaced.

Ok - can confirm the noise also occurs when moving forwards.

Only seems to be when I'm steering though.

Check the anti-roll bar (which goes under car and links left and right suspension) is not broken and that mountings are intact.

a long shot because this would normally cause a clunk as you drove every time you went over a bump.

No indication from underneath.  Bar ok and mountings intact.

cv joints click on the take up. Usually at junctions if you have steering turned too.
Go in a big empty space, and set steering to full lock. When you setboff If it click click click click's odds on its cv joint. Do it one way then stop and try the other way.
If you jack it up your wheel will have play if its goosed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BkihaowxQLk

Worth checking but very rare these days to have a CV joint fail, sometimes they fail if the gaiter gets ripped and grease is lost and crud gets in, this would be obvious as you would have grease all over the place.

CV boot on that side has been replaced in the last few months as was weeping grease.
