Good to see you have a trading standards with some teeth.  Here we have a Consumer Protection Act, barely 12 months old.  They have had several hearings, mainly against mobile phone companies who do not honour their contracts, but despite judgements against them (Vodacom, etc) they just ignore the judgements and carry on.

never use these free checks, winter checks or half price MOT's as they just pile on the work once they got you in

Yes, it is an advertising gimmick and they often try and frighten the less wary into having things done which are not necessary.
