Fix it or dump it?
« on: April 05, 2018, 11:52:52 AM »
Hello All ,

I am new here. I am trying to make up my mind about keeping my wife's Auto Jazz or dumping it. It has done 123000 miles. These are my issues

1) Clutch judder(CVT Oil flush was done by chiswick honda in 2016). The judder returned after 3k miles. I think the clutch needs changing : 685 £ at local honda.

2) P0335 keeps turning up while driving . The car switches off and does start again on restarting. Cleaning EGR valve?
I am thinking this will cost 180 £ in a local garage to fix.

3) Air con doesn't work - the compressor clutch does not engage when the switch is on. It did work for some days when re-gassed.

Work done so far:
1) 4 tyres, all weather Michelins : 450 £
2) New front brake discs and pads at Halfords : 450 £
3) new rear brake callipers , pads, discs : 600£
4) new mid section and end sections exhausts : 200 £
5) 3x services(1 every year) : 900£(500£ at chiswick honda).

Car bought at 1650 £, 2 previous owners, 103k on clock.

Any idea if is worth doing all the work above or shall I just part exchange it somewhere?

Tx,
George.

Aircon is probably a leak somewhere, a decent aircon specialist should be able to find this with a sniffer, or regassing with a dye.

P0335 I think is related to crankshaft position sensor, could need a clean, or could be a bad electrical connection. Worst case, a new crank sensor.

The gearbox should be the only major problem. If it is diagnosed as the start clutch, get some quotes from different garages - if you can find one local, try a gearbox specialist. The cost of fixing the gearbox is obviously going to have the biggest bearing on your decision.

Thanks Sparky Paul.

So just got all 8 spark plugs replaced and the intermittent switch off while driving has gone away, so has the judder while driving.

The previous owner only changed 4 of the front spark plugs, the rear ones were really burnt out- I believe the rear spark plugs were probably changed 30-40k miles ago because I drove the car 20k miles without changing the spark plugs and the previous owner did change the 4 spark plugs 20k earlier, though before that it looks like all 8 spark plugs were changed at 73k miles by Honda.

With the new spark plugs I have to say that judder from stationary is near minimal now , though reversing onto a slope still does make the clutch slip. The CVT flush did take the judder/reversing issue away for some time.

Would driving with the judder be detrimental to the car?

From what I have read elsewhere on this forum I would say that another change of CVT fluid, now, may very well clear the problem. Make sure that GENUINE Honda CVT fluid is used.

Hello, we are in a similar position 53 plate jazz auto, had it from new only done 107k miles, had the judder for at least 5 years, flushing by Honda service does alleviate the problem for a while but has always returned after a few months, have decided to live with it and been happily juddering away for the last 3 year,in fact I think I would miss the challenge of achieving a judder free start.I find pulling away in S and a light throttle is slightly better(appreciate the thing will pack up now but the car owes us nothing and need the incentive to upgrade to a newer jazz, but as long as it passes it’s mot we will keep it)
All the best

What Jocko says about using Honda fluid has merit.
I seem to remember a post here a while back over an engine issue. Basically it was a case of engine failure which on a Honda unless abused are bullet proof. However Honda challenged it stating that non Honda oil had been used and while most would say this is bish providing a proven brand is used it was used as a let out.
There are many cases of an equivalent fluid being used ( not necessarily Honda) and problems have arisen and I should think for the difference in cost between Honda fluid and another is well worth paying.

So just got all 8 spark plugs replaced and the intermittent switch off while driving has gone away, so has the judder while driving.

If that has improved it, I would also consider getting the EGR valve cleaned - especially if the remaining problems at at low revs, and particularly when the engine is warm.

I would also heed the advice above regarding a second fluid change. It's well worth trying before any major expense, and it doesn't matter who does the fluid change - just make sure they use genuine Honda fluid.

Hello All,

Thanks for your responses.  I forgot to mention earlier that the reverse gear slips when trying to get the car to reverse onto a slope.

So , today, got the CVT fluid was flushed today by a Honda Dealer - the judder is gone, but  fixing the reverse gear would need a new transmission as per what they said.

The reverse gear is a deal breaker for me - sometimes people do get irritated when I have to do a U turn from a parked spot - any ideas if this can be fixed cheap?

Cheers,
George.
