...I think the issue with me is that I have almost never had to do it. All our properties have had off road parking and, when working, I always had access to a car park.

Spot on. The problem is not lack of training, it's lack of practice (and that applies to both male and female drivers). If, like me, you live in a street of terraced houses where every journey ends with a parallel park (sometimes in spaces so tight you get both front and rear sensors sounding simultaneously) you soon get good at it.
