LED Stop/ Tail Lamps - Anyone have them?
« on: November 21, 2020, 06:55:41 PM »
After fitting LED sidelights and headlights, which I am impressed with, quite fancy trying LED stop/ tail lamps and particularly the ones that advertised as flashing 4 times in 2 seconds on braking, then staying solid. It seems like a useful additional safety feature.

Anyone tried LED rears and if so any problems?

I've installed solid LED lamps to rear lights to couple of cars with good results. In my GK5 Jazz I have

I don't know about UK, but in Finland flashing stop lamps you described would get you an immediate pull by police, topped with a 70 € fine.

Think it would get you pulled and likely breathalysed here too. It is illegal to fit LED bulbs to a Mk 1.

To be precise any LED bulb to replace conbentional bulb is illegal, but it really doesn't count if it's not toticed by Police or i annual inspection (MOT in UK). My motivation has been to improve reversing lights and licence plate lights.

UK vehicle lighting regulations are outdated & haven't kept up with technology. Filament bulbs will die out as they have for home lighting.

Just read an interesting article about fitting white LED bulbs behind colour lenses (tail, brake or indicator).

WHY YOU SHOULD NOT USE WHITE LEDS BEHIND COLOURED LENSES

The spectrum of light emitted from an LED is very different to that of the light from a halogen or filament bulb. This is particularly relevant when looking at tail/brake...

It is actually EU lighting regulations. Perhaps now we can change them.

The stop/tail lights (non-flashing BTW) I’m looking at  are red LED.

Interestingly I was mentioning flashing brake lights and came across this.

Emergency Stop Signal. EU Regulation 2019/2144 requires that all vehicles must provide an emergency stop signal by means of a light to indicate that a high retardation force is being applied. The emergency stop signal is provided by the brake lights flashing at a frequency of 4Hz (4 cycles per second)

Just referred to that article out of interest, not regarding your plan. I just happened to spot it researching LED headlight.

Thanks, I had seen that article before, on this forum I think. I’m not intending to go for the flashing variety.

UPDATE; The article is on Classic Car LED’s website.

Many European vehicle light regulations are actually derived from UN regulations e.g. "UN R48 Installation of Lighting and Lighting-Signalling Equipment".

I had a look to this regulation. It draws a horrible vision of the future cars interfering and controlling driving more and more. I definitely do not want to have that kind of car. Although it may be unavoidable at some point.

A non-flashing red LED in the brake lights sounds like a great idea to me. Pretty much every time I drive I see cars with one or more brake lights out.

Or is it? What do you think?

After success with other bulbs from Classic Car LEDs, I have gone for this one.
