Is this mysterious bong applicable to all levels of the Mk 4?
If so I need to try it out. Worth a speeding ticket to hear it.
It's only on the most recent models, I have a December 2023 car and it's not on that, I think it came in around Spring this year due to a change in legislation in Europe.

Yes, I can confirm that it only applies to new cars (all new cars, not just the Jazz, EU regulation !!!)
My car, registered in June 24, has the ‘bong’.
It can’t be disabled, but the volume can be turned down to level, that I find just about acceptable. :-X

How does the bong work?
My allotment site has a 5mph limit and when I exit onto a 40mph limit road I get a flashing 5mph indicator until the 30mph sign at the end of the 40mph zone!

My 23 reg SR shows the speed limit about 50% of the time, if it doesn’t see a sign very frequently it displays a null indication until the next sign, maybe my camera is faulty ???  >:(

Normal

IIRC it turns off the indicated speed if it determines you have turned into another street or it hasn't seen a sign for a pre-determined time or distance

I suppose no speed sign is better than a wrong one
Let's be careful out there !

I read somewhere it can be disabled by switching off the road sign recognition but I haven't got it on my car so can't test the theory.

Road sign recognition cannot be permanently disabled, has to be done each journey

I guess hybrids will be relegated to the slow lane again as  powerful EV's proliferate.  My snigger may be limited to seeing them queuing for a charger.
Snigger ye not1
I've owned the Niro for 18 months and never needed to go anywhere near a public charger. (7k miles a year,)
A round trip from Poole to Horsham and back, 220 miles on A and Motorway roads left me with 118 miles in the battery. (100% charge) Admittedly that was in the summer. Many far more expensive BEVs cannot match the eNiro's range.
At current electricity prices (22p pKwh) and petrol at £1.37 a litre my car costs 6 pence a mile and a  Full HEV ICE doing 44mpg (as my e:HEV CR-V did) costs 14pence per mile. Nuff said!

I attach a google street view clip of the actual speed limit sign which caused the 'bong' when I exceeded 20 mph. (otherwise it was 30 mph)    The limit is conditional on the lights flashing. They were not.  It was a school day but not at a time when kids were likely to be  on the loose. Pedestrians ,small and large ,are  always a possibility any time, any where.  Had it been children's  'chucking out time' I would have been doing 20 or less regardless of whether  the lights were flashing or not .  They might be faulty. (lights or children  -and especially school run  parents)   I had judged for myself the appropriate speed for the actual circumstances.   The 'bong' made me double check my chosen speed (an indicated 23 mph) and reassess whether It was appropriate and whether I had missed something.

I didnt resent being wrongly bonged and neither would I  resent being bonged if I deliberately choose to exceed the limit . ;)    So far  I  have not felt the  need to switch anything off.  Its not  continual, or annoyingly loud  . Indeed I cant even remember if 'bong' is the best word to describe it.  Maybe chime, or beep.

If the system relies on traffic sign recognition, I wouldn't want to rely on it to keep me legal.  On my Mk3, the traffic sign information display regularly misses a 30mph sign on the exit from a roundabout near me. The Mk3 has bongs, not linked to traffic signs but pre-programmed, in my case currently set to the default values of 30mph and 50mph - I rather like them!

It is my understanding that the 20mph flashing signs at schools are advisory, the others are mandatory

I'm not sure, but it does appear to have read and recognised the speed roundel. And would presumably  still react if I exceeded 20 mph at 3 am when most young school children will be at home on their smartphones.
Or has it?. Maybe the 20 mph limit is taken from gps data in the satnav.

My 2021 mk 4 sometimes displayed continental speed limits that only applied during peak hours with a little time clock symbol. And even displayed winter speed limits  with snow symbols  when  there were no physical signs yet erected at the roadside  . (I went back and checked  :-[ ) Likely to be gps data.   I dont yet  know how the 2024 car ( Which I may now call Bongo)  will deal with these.

Sorry . :-[ I accept EV's will meet the needs of many users very well.  Its more accurate to say I sometimes see public chargers where I am glad I have not arrived  desperately needing to use it  to complete a planned journey.  Either a queue , or obstructed, inaccessible or not working. I'd hate to have to plan a continental trip around EV range ,Hotels with chargers etc. I prefer quaint hotels in medieval towns, sparsely populated mountain ranges etc.    One day maybe if my idea  for a uric acid powered battery gets developed . ;D  I would like to be more eco friendly.

Not so. If the circular sign has a red border, it's mandatory. In Highway Code parlance, it's a "Sign which MUST be obeyed".

There are similar signs which have a grey (or maybe green) circular border which are the advisory ones. Problem is these are still read by the Traffic Sign Recognition system on my Mk3 and presented to the driver (and intelligent speed limiter, if in use) as speed limits; not sure if the system in the Mk4 is improved so that it ignores those?

I mentioned: “bongs for speeding” in my post which was incorrect. My Jazz is a ‘23 model year so I don’t have the mandatory bongs and just get the over speed indicator on the drivers display

I’m probably one of the few people that would actually prefer the ‘bong’ sound now found on the ‘24 model as I keep speeding in the Jazz  ::)

I think you will find that the ‘speed bongs’ are triggered by the Jazz front facing camera, not GPS.
I have a village local to me, normally subject to a 30mph limit.
However the residents raised a petition some time ago, seeking a reduction in the speed limit to 20mph.
In order to press the point, most their ‘dustbins’ (refuse collection bins) have had the number 20 painted on them.
Consequently, whenever I drive through the village on ‘dustbin’ day, the ‘bongs’ are triggered whenever I exceed 20mph. ;D
