Title: Car shows on TV - Top Gear, Fifth Gear, Wheeler Dealers, etc.
Post by: guest238 on November 01, 2008, 12:28:10 PM
If you like to watch a bunch of blokes acting like fools in a aircraft hanger in Guildford, watch Top Gear tomorrow at 8 on BBC2.

Personally, I can't think of anything better on a Sunday evening. 8)

Speaking of Top Gear...the budget for the show has been cut:

Top Gear is one of the best comedy programmes on nowadays. You can't consider it a serious motoring programme.
Title: Re: Car shows on TV - Top Gear, Fifth Gear, Wheeler Dealers, etc.

/\ True. A serious motoring programme like 'old' Top Gear wouldn't pull in the viewers, hence why it was axed in its original format back in 2001.

Glad to hear it. I can look forward to going into work the following Monday and hearing the self appointed office car bores regurgitate another half truth Clarkson uttered on the previous night's Top Gear.

The best example was when our resident Vauxhall fanboy was keen to point out that the 160mph Vectra VXR is, according to Clarkson, faster than a BMW M5, clearly forgetting that the M5 is electronically limited to 155mph. :D :D :D :D

Well, from the bare facts given if the M5 is electronically limited to 155mph and the vauxhall ISN'T limited and can do 160mph - then clearly the Vauxhall VXR is the faster car, at least as far as top speed is concerned (unless the BMW is limited to 155 but can go faster when you ask it nicely).

Or is there a conversion factor from BMW mph to Vauxhall mph that I am not aware of that changes the above figures?? (eg 1.0 BMWmph = 1.2 Vauxhall mph)

- or am I just thinking like an engineer????

There is an agreement between the German premium car manufacturers to limit top speed to 155mph (250kph)...at least 'out of the box'. ;) Porsche didn't bite though.

Working in IT I tend to come across my fair share of cocktards who try to disguise their limited knowledge of cars with whatever nonsense Clarkson has spouted on Top Gear or just talk complete BS.

Best one was the IT manager at a client site with a current-shape Audi TT diesel. He clocked my Civic 1.8 Sport and immediately repeated something Clarkson said on TG about the Civic being the equivalent of Thora Hird in a thong. He then claimed that his TT diesel was faster than a Civic Type R "because it had more torque". I didn't bother pointing out that the Type R has 30bhp more, is almost a second quicker to 62mph and six mph faster up top as sometimes you just have to humor all this willy-waving.  ::)

There is an agreement between the German premium car manufacturers to limit top speed to 155mph (250kph)...at least 'out of the box'. ;) Porsche didn't bite though.

Various reasons have been suggested for this move over the years. Some say it is to appease the left-wing parties in Germany over safety and environment concerns, others say its to do with the technical limitations of tyres and aerodynamics.

There is also a similar agreement between the Japanese bike makers to limit top speed to 187mph (300kph for reason being that it is nice round figure like 250kph).

Its no secret in enthusiast circles that some of these high performance cars are electronically limited to 155mph when - derestricted - the true top speed is much higher. It's equally well known that these speed limiters can be bypassed with a little bit of tweaking. I understand Audi (I think) will even do it 'for a fee' on some models.

Utter waste of a Sunday evening. Clarkson is an idiot, Hammond should be off presenting kids TV shows and the excellent James May is wasted. The format has become tired and strained, the guests are pointless (that guy from the Henry Trotter films or whatever they're called FFS?!) and I don't care that Mr Scientology weirdo Tom Cruise is on next week (but I'll make an exception for Cameron Diaz  ;D )

Someone should dust Quentin Willson out of his coffin and wheel him out more often - the guy sticks up for the motorist on the important issues where Clarkson is just a liability with his dangerous ramblings.

At least fifth gear have given those two sofa monkeys from the last series the push.

Didn't he get done years ago for clocking motors?

Watching Clarkson interview Cameron Diaz was cringeworthy in an otherwise good show.

I've heard the thing about Willson clocking cars is actually true (it was before he was on Top Gear) but I can't verify that. I think he even admitted to it some 'old' Top Gear segment on the dangers of buying clocked motors.

He owns the rights to the Britain's Worst...Driver, Builder, etc., TV format and sources cars for wealth clients.

I see the current Stig has been 'outed'.

The last time the Stig left/was outed, TG staged his 'death' by flinging him in a Jag XJS off an aircraft carrier. A month or so later, TG magazine was full of angry letters about how insensitively the Stig's death was handled, some not grasping it was all staged as a joke.

I also liked that show . Cameron Diaz drving the car once said stg like"fu**ing English gears".

Did she mean gears being manual or operating with left hand ?

She assured Clarkson it was down to operating the gears with her left hand. So she said...;)

David Soul (from 70s cop show Starksy and Hutch) destroyed two gearboxs! Lionel Ritchie also struggled with manual gears but his real problem was when the wheel came off!

'Metro' - what a quality paper! ;)

Hopefully Top Gear will be back soon. The other Sunday I was made by the wife to sit through The X Factor judges houses stage, where Our Cheryl and the dyslexic guy from the Black Eyed Peas (complete with sunglasses out of a cereal packet) sent a Cheryl Cole Team America/Thunderbirds puppet and an 80's Madonna lookalike to the live shows.

Anyway, can't wait for Clarkson to make a biting swipe at a certain former acquaintance! ;D

Top Gear will be returning to our screens with a Christmas special followed by a new series early next year. In the meantime there is a Top Gear Special tomorrow (Monday 29th) called 50 Years of Bond Cars (as in 007, not orange three-wheelers  :P) on BBC2 at 9pm.

A new series of Fifth Gear has already started but has moved from Channel 5 to Discovery (Sky 520, Virgin 212) at 8pm Mondays in an hour long format.

I've been watching Wheeler Dealers on Discovery Shed where Mike Brewer and Ed China buy, restore and sell classic cars. These episodes are from 2008/09 and have featured some iconic cars from my childhood in 1980s, including the Mercedes SL (ake the Bobby Ewing) and Lotus Espirt (as Roger Moore drove in a couple of Bond Films). Definitely worth watching.

Clarkson suspended over alleged incident with a producer.
Last few episodes of this season cancelled (in case you didn't know, they film the studio segment the Wednesday before transmission).
Petition to get Clarkson reinstated.
Clarkson, May and Hammond's contract up for renewal at the end of this month (not related to the above).

Three possible outcomes:

1. Clarkson will be reinstated.

2. Clarkson leaves the BBC (his choice or otherwise), Top Gear returns with May and Hammond signing new contracts and Clarkson is replaced by a new host. Clarkson may go to another TV channel.

3. Clarkson leaves the BBC (his choice or otherwise), May and Hammond refuse to sign new contracts without Clarkson and the three presenters go to another TV channel. BBC hold all of the rights to Top Gear (Clarkson sold his share a few years ago) and bring TG back with three new presenters.

Without Clarkson TG's ratings will dive, that is what happened to the original (or 'old') Top Gear after Clarkson left in 1998 and in 2001 the BBC axed it.

I guess the new TG lineup will get some new fans who maybe didn't appreciate Clarksons excellent TV presentation style but many of the older fans (like me) won't watch it any more because
1. they hate Chris Evans and his inane Disc Jockey style and false jollity (he is OK at talking to kids,  but not adults).
2. they just hate Chris Evans for no good reason except he is eminently hate-able .

Have been watching this,  we have had some truly great ideas and game changing designs (Triumph Dolomite Sprint - first mass production engine with 4 valve head - more power than a BMW of the time but fitted into an old body) (hydrolastic suspension gave car great handling but badly put together so system rusted away and leaked) but they have been badly executed due to bean counters penny pinching.

I recorded Top Gear on Sunday night. It is a while since I watched it last and the trailer looked interesting. I watched it last night. That is an hour of my life I will never get back. It was crap. Didn't even bother with Extra Gear. Deleted that and the rest of the series from my recorder. Only smattering of humour was Matt LeBlanc. When he leaves it will be dismal. Now I remember why it was so long since I watched it!

It's like panning for gold. Every now and then they have a good piece but mostly it is rubbish that I don't have the time for. A very poor recreation of the Clarkson/May/Hammond original.

Having said that, I haven't engaged with their 'Grand Tour' Amazon show either. Watched a few from the first season, but I think their particular style is now looking very dated and out of touch.

Just watched last night's Top Gear, and thought it was brilliant. The new presenter line up are top notch and gel well together. My wife watches "Take Me Out", and I have always found Paddy McGuinness  a real tonic. Stick him on a car programme and he is superb.

I watched Top Gear for the first time in many years, I thought I would give it a chance with the new set up - can't be worse than Clarkson.

I like McGuinness too, but the comedy was forced at times - should improve as the presenters find their feet. Flintoff always comes across as a bit of a dumbo, and I see they have another diminutive stooge to replace the Hammond character.

Not a bad effort though, to be fair.

Agree,  although as sparkyP says Flintoff comes across as a bit of a thicko.  Now all they need to do is dig through the Top Gear junk room and take 'those' number plates on a trip through Argentina ( maybe wait until the Argies get their electricity supply sorted ).

This week I discovered Bangers & Cash on yesterday, it's a series following a family run classic car auctions in a Yorkshire village, lots of interesting cars passing through, it's on Yesterday channel, series 2 is currently being shown, series 1 is available for download on sky if you have the facility. Worth a look if this sort of thing floats your boat.

I don't know how long Mathewsons (of B&C fame) have been there in Thornton-le-Dale, but they were there back in the 90s when I had a week in a holiday cottage there. Very interesting place to look round, especially the motor museum where they had their own collection. Unfortunately, I believe these have now been relocated to make room for more classic auction cars, but there should be something interesting to see.

I record Top Gear and so far have only seen episode one. They did a thing on company cars with a hybrid BMW, a hybrid Volvo and a Tesla Model 3. All three said the Tesla was the best!
They also had the new 1000 hp Ferrari hybrid. Obviously, Top Gear is going "Greenish".

They obviously don't worry about reliability. Tesla has some dreadful owner reports.

They won't see many issues in a 24-hour test. To be fair to Tesla, the issues they have are not strictly "reliability" but, according to JD Power, Tesla's quality issues are primarily with cosmetic items, such as paint imperfections, poorly fitting body panels, and squeaks and rattles – rather than core powertrain or infotainment functions.

What I have seen  - on You Tube so caution - is thin paint on model 3 and very thin easily dented panels - one touch is enough to leave a dimple (aluminium for weight).

Factory paint quality appears poor.

Bangers & Cash series 3 has now started on Yesterday channel, it follows a family run classic car auction.

Also, not really a tv show, but this might be of interest, the humour won't be for everyone,

(Can't get it to go in as a hyperlink on my tablet)

this is car throttle channel on youtube, episode, "Non-Car Guy Changes Brakes For The First Time"  on a mk1 jazz, there's another one where he services following instructions via facetime.

Some Youtube car channels:

Auto Expert John Cadogan - very direct and straight talking Australian motoring expert.
Big Car - videos detailing the history of various cars.
Car Cleaning Guru - car detailing guides.
Petrolicious - high quality videos on classic cars.
Thames TV - videos on various subjects from the archives of the former ITV London region (1968-1992), including period car reviews (keep 'em peeled for Shaw Taylor and some fitting Seventies' attire).

Some other YouTube channels members might like, they are all car related, but not Honda orientated.

Harry's Garage - mainly performance & luxury cars, has unrivalled access to (or in some cases owns) a massive collection of exotic cars. Very genial & civilised gentleman.

High Peak Autos - 2nd hand car dealer that reviews cars in stock, wide variety & straight forward opinions, good or bad.

Bob Flavin - Irish motoring journalist turned youtuber, new car reviews, all in euros & kilometres etc.

Nobby on Cars - another Irish reviewer of new cars

Tyrells Classic Workshop - restorer of high end classic cars, very knowledgeable.

Dispatches, "Why Is My Car So Expensive?" Channel 4, 8pm Monday 15th August

"Dispatches investigates the soaring cost of both new and second-hand cars. Used electric runabouts are getting listed for as much as £60k. Old bangers are fetching a pretty penny. And the waiting list for new cars can be over a year. But what’s behind the surge in prices?

Can it all be put down to global factors like the war in Ukraine, Covid and supply chain problems? Reporter and motoring journalist Ginny Buckley delves behind the scenes to find out if there is more going on and finds a car industry that’s making huge profits with questions to answer.

Buckley also looks at the knock-on effects, such as rising car crime, and crashed cars with a hidden history being sold for a premium, as she advises how to make sure you don’t get ripped off when making the second biggest purchase of your life."

Does anyone here watch The Late Brake Show on YouTube? Presented by Jonny Smith, once a Fifth Gear presenter (and he has appeared on other motoring shows). There are usually 2 episodes that go out a week, covering not just car reviews but stuff for car enthusiasts generally. No silliness like Top Gear, just honest, down to earth presenting.

I have watched the first two episodes of Fifth Gear - Recharged. It's alright as motoring shows go, some of the presenters are quite entertaining and so I will continue with it. Although the car press (both TV and magazines) in general need to stop peddling this idea that electric cars are the answer. The future will require a mix of electric, petrol, diesel and other fuel sources (such as hydrogen). Electric isn't for everyone and never will be, no matter how much the EU and government try to push the agenda (remember that diesel was pushed in the early noughties, and look what happened with that). ICE cars will be on the roads for decades to come.

I watched the latest Recharged Civic review and my impression was they weren't reviewing it for day to day use but as a racing car.

They aren't alone as a lot of TV reviews are based on performance not say commuting comfort or ease of driving.

Both 'The Late Brake Show' and 'Harry's Garage' on YouTube both provide real-world (and enjoyable) car reviews.

And I agree about the recent Honda Civic (11th gen) review on Fifth Gear Recharged. Almost all of the motoring press have been singing the praises of this new model but I thought the Fifth Gear lot were testing the car in situations that were not representative of day-to-day driving and seem somewhat indifferent about it.

I think Big Car and Ed's auto reviews are outstanding.

Big Car's are so well researched, really good stuff and I've wathced his entire content. Brilliant.

Ed is so Dutch it's funny. Once you get past his unique accent, the content really is superb. Highy recommended.

If you like cars, the channels above really are worth investigating.

I have also wathced a lot of content by Car UK. A proper motor trader with a pitch. Lots of interesting videos on buying. Aston Barclay haven't changed much since I last bought from them c20yrs ago. Still fast, still fun and bargains to be had for the brave.
