All modern conveniences
« on: December 11, 2024, 04:32:49 PM »
I have just made a short drive of about 8 miles  and it struck me just how many of the Mk4's  clever tricks came into play.

Daylight - but very dull and overcast. Temperature +8c
Car opened  without  touching keys. .
Started car. Headlights came on automatically.   Heating already on 21c climate control.  I put on heated seats and heated steering wheel  . (to try it out on new car) .  Selected D and drove off, without neeeding to release handbrake.
Stopped at traffic lights . I was first in queue . , No messing with gear stick or clutch. Handbrake applied with flick of finger.
Lights changed to green. I noticed youngster intending to overtake all the stationary traffic before it moved .  No chance kiddo. I just  touched the throttle (no need for handbrake) and  I was gone. Left him behind  for dead  (carefully   ;D )   But did hit 31 mph in 30 limit.  Single bong from the car   :-[
By half a mile from home heated seats and steering wheel were snug  and warm.
Then a couple of roundabouts. Merged with traffic  and rapidly through bends as easy as winkie. No messing with gears. great handling and torque. And silence.
Then joined traffic queue on hill.   No rolling back (hill start assist ) Just squirt and go.
Still light enough so I selected brake hold.  Stop/ start traffic and traffic lights. No clutch, gear changes, applying or releasing handbrake . Simples.
Started to rain a bit. Wipers  came on automatically.
Inadvertently reached 23 mph near a school .(about 2pm No kids about )  another bong.  :-[
Arrived home and reversed onto my drive, greatly assisted by  the reversing camera.
Locked car with touch of finger on door  handle.

All this without doing anything special with controls and settings other than using brake hold.

I have been driving over 50 years, mostly a manual car.  I can do all the old fashioned stuff that used to be  necessary.  But it was great not having to. . And  it did allow me to devote a tiny bit more attention to driving safely.
(Even kiddo the overtaker - we would otherwise both have reached a traffic island at the same time. )

So folks dont be hesitant about buying a mk 4 or having to learn some new tricks.   Its great. :-*

Couldn’t agree more LV!

I was Jazzing today after a couple of days of no use

It’s all just so easy and enjoyable.  I also used all the mod cons today; heated steering wheel, heated seats, auto air con, auto wipers, auto headlights, auto brake hold, keyless entry, reverse camera, bongs for speeding etc etc

All while the hybrid system did it’s thing with no input from me and giving a silent drive

I also have absolutely no idea if the ICE is running or not; with the MK2 Prius I owned for 9 years you definitely knew when the ICE kicked in, it was better in my Mk4 Prius but not as seamless as the Jazz

I still can’t get over how well the Jazz picks up and I have to keep an eye on my speed; I never had to do that with my Prius

....

A dead giveaway is the green "EV" (electric vehicule) indicatior in the right upper corner of the drivers display:
The ICE is running whenever EV is off.

I went out yesterday and had a boy racer pull up alongside in his 20 year old small Skoda. Sat at the lights with him revving away making his modified exhaust sound like a tractor.

I'd spotted him in the mirror weaving about and being a pain in his matt light grey all over paint job except for lights

Like the above, I left him for dead when the lights changed :D
Let's be careful out there !

I leave Skodas, Renaults and the like alone. But it's fun to embarrass someone in a BMW or that brand with 5 zeros (4 on the grille and 1 behind the steering wheel).

It speaks volumes (excuse pun) that you can often only tell if the ICE is running by the presence or absence of a green light  :D   It is audible when it needs to run quite fast to meet a heavy demand. Yesterday the ICE was quite audible when I first powered on, probably due to power demand  from the climate control/aircon. (And you have to press a button to power on, so,contrary to what Mrs LV claims I do still live a life of endless toil )  . By  about 200 metres  from home when I stopped at the drag strip  (some call them traffic lights ) the ICE had  become virtually inaudible .

For those who might disapprove , prompt  starts from traffic lights  etc  can be safer. .Like many lights these  have 2 lanes, with the right hand lane  ending and merging into the left lane just after the lights.  Those in the right hand lane tend to regard it as a 'fast lane'  or 'overtaking' lane and predisposed  to expect precedence in merging. It requires skill and  consideration that not everyone possesses. (even in countries where the right lane is the left lane because they drive on the wrong side of the road   ;D )

If both lanes  are evenly matched  it can become a bit of a challenge for supremacy .
If one car (eg a Jazz) is clearly faster away  and immediately ahead any challenge is  over before it even starts.  My previous Yaris diesel was quite nippy, but I knew my place was generally  in the 'slow' lane.

This is the main reason I just LURVE my eNiro 201 BHP. INSTANT 265 Nm torque.
HUGE dragstrip  acceleration and terrific 50-70 ::) overtakeability.
I first experienced what you chaps love in my e:HEV HR-V and then my e:HEV CR-V.
It is thanks to them that I decided to go the whole hog and go BEV. Sadly Honda did not make a BEV then and I cannot afford an E:NY1
I have been driving  for 62 years  and am a complete car nut. eNiro is my 79th car.
I hope they have passed the assisted dying bill when they stop me driving!! ;D

I guess hybrids will be relegated to the slow lane again as  powerful EV's proliferate.  My snigger may be limited to seeing them queuing for a charger.

Sometimes on long transcontinental  journeys   I will recognise  that a car overtaking me at manic speed also did so an hour or so previously . Presumably they had  stopped to refuel their gas guzzling needs , or coffee guzzling. .   I dont recall recognising a repeat EV.  Maybe there is nothing distinctive about them . Or if they stop to recharge it takes so long they never again enter my sphere.(or memory span  :-[ )  Or none dare to undertake such long trips. Or ,to be fair, they remain  ahead of me and are  long gone.

I’ve now owned hybrids for 10 years and I wouldn’t consider anything else. A standard ICE seems old fashioned to me especially the starter motor noise

I have no way of charging a full EV otherwise I’d buy one as most of my journeys are around town where they shine

I do occasionally make a 300 mile round trip which no EV could manage without a long break to charge up

When I saw the new thread from Lord Voltermore, headed, “All modern conveniences”, I thought to self,

He’s only gone and removed one of the rear fold flat seats, and installed a low flush lavatory.

Now THAT would be an extra worth paying for!

Maybe Honda can divert some of their investment in Formula 1 to develop the Jazz "Wee Hev .  If they can further develop it as new battery technology they are on to a winner.

What is this witchcraft called a ‘bong’ when one exceeds the speed limit?
Don’t think I’ve noticed this or my hearing has gone prematurely or  I just stick to the speed limit? ;D

Is this mysterious bong applicable to all levels of the Mk 4?
If so I need to try it out. Worth a speeding ticket to hear it.

It's only on the most recent models, I have a December 2023 car and it's not on that, I think it came in around Spring this year due to a change in legislation in Europe.
