Rear spindle nut replacement
« on: October 14, 2021, 09:17:11 PM »
I need to replace my brake shoes & the manual requires new stake nuts on the spindles.
I've found some on eBay at £10 each, does anyone have a better (cheaper) source for them please?
Or do you reuse the old ones?
Thanks.

I wouldn't re-use them if they recommend new nuts on the spindles.

Years ago I was in a Triumph Dolomite where the half shaft nuts had been re-used  on the rear and the one nut came off putting a load on the other half shaft and both rear wheels came off.
This sent the car careering across the road into a parked car.

From a safety point of view I wouldn't risk it, put new ones on.

If it was me I'd buy genuine Honda ones as it's a safety critical item. You don't know what the eBay ones are like quality wise.

Try Cox Motor Parts who sell genuine Honda spares.

It will be alright in the end, if it's not alright then it's not the end !

Yes I agree, but I was hoping someone who has done the job would point me in a helpful direction.
I feel £20 for 2 nuts is a bit steep but I'm having trouble sourcing the correct ones from a supplier as no-one seems to call them stake nuts or spindle nuts.

It looks the same but without the spec it's hard to say.  I still think £10 each is pretty steep, but maybe that's reasonable.

If you take care knocking out the stake, say with a parallel punch, you should be fine to reuse the nut a second time - so long as it hasn't been previously mangled. I've done this many times before.

I'm not familiar with the rear drum on the Jazz, but it is usually possible to replace shoes without removing the hub... it's just a bit fiddly.

I agree, £10 is a lot for just one nut. I'd be tempted to re-use.

If you torque them correctly and then check again some miles later as you would with wheel bolts? Just a thought.

Yes, I'm thinking I can probably reuse them but I'd rather replace with new, reasonably priced nuts so I have peace of mind.  The problem is I'm having trouble finding the correct nuts.  I think they are used on tractors & other machinery more than cars but I was hoping someone on here could point me to a good supplier.

Yeah sorry, no idea. I know what you mean about spec though. Like bearings, the size is key, they don't have to come in a Honda branded box.

Maybe you could take a nut to a local engineers merchants and see if they can match it for you at a much lower price?

I tried the part number on ebay however and found this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/334117749361?hash=item4dcaf84271:g:7HgAAOSwsaxhHOkg

I don't see any real reason why the nuts should not be re-used technically, it's not like a yield fastener.

The only issue might be if the new stake point comes very close to the old point, in which case you could try swapping sides, the chances of the thread starting in exactly the same point so the stake point being in the same place on both sides is slim.

(I'd just add that I did have issues once with that ebay supplier in the post above, haven't used them since.)

I've bought several parts from CarPartsInMotion and found them to be good.

The listing is handy in giving a list of Reference OE/OEM Numbers though:

BORG & BECK: BHN201, HONDA: 33326-760-668, 90305-S30-003, HONDA: 90305S30003, QUINTON HAZELL: QWB3836, FHN201

Should provide lots of info to enable searching for a cheaper replacement if needed.  :D

Once staked, you don't want to be touching them. Just leave them alone, the point of the stake is to stop them moving - like a split pin through a castellated nut. As embee says, they are not stretch bolts of yielding fixings so can be re-used, provided they have not been mangled during previous re-use.

I used to use stake nuts on the front of the FIAT 126, but they were a coarse single start thread, so they always lightened to the same spot. I used to buy half a dozen at a time when I visited the dealer because you were always having to strip the hub for most jobs at the front end (If I remember correctly they were LH and RH threads for each side). Then my mate got a 126 and we were able to swap nuts meaning we both got two goes out of each nut.
