Recommended Oil - Tripple QX 10W-40
« on: September 17, 2015, 08:03:21 AM »
I can't seem to find the original info pack which came with my Jazz so I'm not sure what engine oil it should use.  The Haynes book under the Lubricants and Fluids section says

Engine oil:
SAE 5W-30, 5W-40, 10W-30 or 10W-40 to specification API SJ or SL

I have some TripleQX 10W-40 Semi oil which API and SL specifications, so as far as Haynes is concerned, it is a suitable oil for my 2009 Jazz.  I'm not endorsing TripleQX but it seems to offer the same benefits as the leading brands:

1. Excellent Low temperature fluidity providing immediate circulation after cold starting
2. Fuel saving capability due to low viscosity characteristics
3. Low volatility due to part synthetic base stocks
4. Outstanding engine cleanliness and protection
5. Catalyst compatible
6. API SL/CF, ACEA A3, B3, B4
7. VW500.00, 505.00, MB229.1

I guess the market leaders spend massive amounts on marketing.  Perhaps it is all hype.  I don't know.

What are your thoughts?

Honda actually recommends 0W-20 in the jazz but 0W-30 is also ok which I personally use.

I had some 10W-40 some years ago and that was fine no problems.

I used this oil in our Rover 45 V6, even with 80000 on the clock no oil was used between oil changes which I did at 5000 miles. Rover recommended every 12000 miles.
I can't speak for our Jazz as it came with two years free servicing so I do not know what oil the dealer used, he did try and con me for an extra £21 to upgrade from semi to fully synthetic oil. So I presume semi synthetic is the order of the day, unless you want the fully, which is supposed to give better mileage on fuel.
I have read posts where Castrol has had some bad reviews which begs the question if it's well know does it make it better?

I hope not as I have used castrol for over 6 years!

Finally I found my Owners Manual.  I didn't find an actual answer in there, just a viscosity chart.
However, there was a flyer from castrol titled "The right lubricant for your Honda Engine" showing two options for the Jazz.

1. Magnatec Pro' 10W-40 (Trusted Protection)
2. SLX Pro' Powerflow C3 0W-30 (Ultimate Protection)

Looks like I'm alright with 10W-40 after all.  Just as well as I have just changed the oil.

I apologize if I  inferred that Castrol had a problem. I always used Castrol Magnatex but for some reason it didn't suit the Rover V6 engine. On start up the hydraulic cam followers used to rattle something chronic and I found that the triple QX quietened them down. It might have been on a Rover forum I read about dissatisfaction with Castrol.
It is unfortunate that vehicles have their little foibles.
Many many years ago my Boss had a Viva HA. We serviced it and I used Champion plugs, all was well for about 500 miles and then it started missing etc, so thinking it was faulty plugs changed them ( he was paying out of his profits) same problem. Contacted Vauxhall NO use AC Delco plugs . Problem solved. I have heard of such foibles with other makes and it did seem the old Rover had them just as others.
Good luck

A few years ago Castrol Magnatec had a bad reputation amongst performance car owners- I think I read about it on a Porsche  forum. I think it was being marketed as fully synthetic oil , which it isn't. Owners were getting problems with carbon deposits when using Magnatec.  If you search around for bargains you can usually find Castrol Edge or Mobil 1 at a good price, usually when you don't need it.

When I changed to 0w-20 fully synthetic on my 2009 Jazz I noticed a huge boost to my economy.  That and eco tyres took my MPG from about 54mpg to around 60.  Which works out to about 50 miles on every tank. For me that's about £10 a month saving.  Over 3 years that almost pays for the oil and tyres.  (Continental Eco Contact 5 £200 fitted and balanced from Formula 1 service centre)

Just my pennies worth..... if I had that oil (your 10-40) i would use that in the summer. Then when winter came go for the a 5-30 either as semi or fully synthetic if it is on offer (<£30/gallon). Or add a litre of 5-30 (to your 10-40) and use it whenever, i am assuming you have a 4.5 or 5l can.
