Engine varieties in a 1.4 Mk 2
« on: June 18, 2020, 07:57:08 PM »
I have a 1.4 Mk 2 ES with an i-shift gearbox (new).  My engine, while
extremely good has very high milage.  Will I be easily able to change
it for the engine out of a manual car; as these are a more common car?

How many miles has car done, Honda engines are legendary for covering high mileage and 200,000 is easily achieved without any work on the engine.. I did over 190,000 miles in a 1.5 civic and engine still did not use any oil between changes.

The i-shift is just a manual gearbox with auto actuation so a swap should be entirely feasible. As culzean says, the Honda engine has great reliability. One poster on here did 256,000 miles on his driving school car. Unless your engine is obviously clapped out I wouldn't worry about it. My own engine is almost run in as it has only done 127,000 miles.

In fitfreak.net forum https://www.fitfreak.net/forums/2nd-generation-ge-08-13/95731-400k-09-fit-build-thread.html there is one 2009 Fit, which has already more than 525 k miles in it without opening the engine, and still going strong.

Makes my 170-odd thousand miler sound barely run in!

I have the same i-shift and it's a baby at 102000 miles. I would make sure you service it at the correct interval using top quality oil and oil filter.

I was going to say Iwould actually worried more on the i-shift gearbox as mine failed at 82k miles and Honda wanted £2k to fix it. Unluckily with all the help from my friends here, I got it done for £350 by a specialist. But at least you say you have a new gearbox so that's good.

Thank you all for your encouraging comments. Mine is fast approaching 170k miles.
I always change oil and filter at 5000 miles (0w-30 Petronas oil) and use Honda parts
The new gearbox was truly costly and so I want to be sure I can extend the life of
this excellent car for as long as possible to get value for that expenditure. I have done the
tappets once and the plugs twice. Mine uses almost no oil or coolant despite being heavily
used in urban traffic and long motorway trips. My question is to help prepare for the future.
Cheers

You may want to consider a thicker oil for that engine mileage.  Anything over 75,000 considered high mileage - oils for higher mileage engines have additives to keep old seals flexible, and because gaps in bearings are larger the higher viscosity helps maintain oil pressure.

I checked the links in the link and all go to Amazon, but none of the oils is currently available there!

Did the gearbox need replacing because of i-shift failure. Was quoted £2k but a specialist repair it for £350.
