Alloys sizing/compatibility with GE
« on: December 31, 2018, 12:18:14 PM »
Would GE alloys fit?
Stock mk3 15s are 6J 50 ET
While mk2 15s are 5.5J 45ET
I am not that friendly with offsets..

Also does half an inch alloy width difference affect tire choice?
i.e. I don't it to be considered "non-standard" rims/tyres so not to notify  insurers

You should be fine even on the mk2 wheels the rims will be 5mm further out ie towards the wing.
There are wheel rim offset calculators on the internet

Standard Mk3 SE tyres are 185/60; Mk2 are 175/65. The Mk 3's are therefore wider, which I think contributes to a smoother ride.

Thanks, I've checked calculators, and they would seem to fit no change in terms of closeness to brake calipers
both 5.5j and 6j would take standard mk3 tires apparently 185/60

Other posters and myself have found that narrower taller sidewall tyres make for better ride comfort and a quieter ride, my wife has 175/65R15 tyres on her Mk2 and ride is noticeably better than 16" tyres it came with. Wider tyres better for cornering but narrower are better for braking ( think of the contact patch as a rectangle and it makes sense)  - narrower tyres less likely to aquaplane as well, because water has less distance to travel from centre of tyre to the edge ( which is why narrow bicycle tyres can be smooth ).

Some people will only consider you an expert if they agree with your point of view or advice,  when you give them advice they don't like they consider you an idiot

I agree that 15" wheels give a more comfortable ride than 16", because of the deeper tyres.  I would expect wider tyres of the same depth would also help the ride, I.e. 185/60 on 15" wheels would be more comfortable than 175/65 on 15" wheels.  But ride comfort is subjective - is there any objective measure?  I don't know what the units of comfort would be called!

Help please!
Looking for advice on purchasing these Mini 1 steel wheels 175/65/15 as I think they are compatible with my 2012 GE6 Jazz

https://www.gumtree.com/p/wheel-rims-tyres/continental-wintercontact-ts810s-175-65-r-15-set-of-4-fitted-tyres-with-mini-1st-steel-rims/1453460139

Can any gurus advise?

Thanks

A few things to check, bolt spacings/PCD, rim offset etc, but also a couple which are often overlooked are the spigot diameter (the big hole in the middle which should/must be a correct close fit on the hub) and the type of wheel nut required, cone or spherical seat etc.

Thanks Embee

I had thought that Mini 1 wheels were compatible with GE Jazz.

Sounds more complex!

How can I ensure compatibility short of test fitting new ones ?

Much appreciated

Why not go to my tyres.co.uk then to steel or alloy wheels + tyres enter your Jazz details. You can then view what combinations fit.
I would recommend finding used Honda wheels before going into the labyrinth of these will look great.....

An old post indeed, but since noone has pointed this out: Yes, wheel centerline is 5 mm further out, but beause the rim is 1/2" narrower, the outer edge is actually 1 mm futher in.
