Many of my friends have SUV 4x4s, the most popular being the Range Rover and Range Rover Evoque.  I would say the Honda CR-V (which my wife has) is in the better 2/3 of this segment.  The Porche Cayenne is by far the best equipped and smoothest to drive, with a very quiet ride and excellent performance, for which you pay a premium.  The Lexus 4x4 is on a par with the Honda CR-V, as quiet, as well equipped and the Honda is half the price of the Lexus.  The Hyuandai Santa-Fe is also very popular but the suspension clonks around quite alarmingly.  The very worst one I have been in is the Chrysler Cherokee, no sophistication at all and filled with cheap plastic.  My friend's one, about 2 years old now is on its 3rd starter and ring gear.  It is also very heavy on petrol with a 3.7 litre engine
