I noticed these the other day on a JLR SUV in our local Homebase car park. Flush door handles that pop out when the car is unlocked. They then pop back in when the car is driven off.
So what happens in icy conditions? How do you get in when the electric motor goes wrong? And being an unreliable JLR product it is going to!
What an absolutely stupid piece of car design. So, when will the rest of the car manufacturers follow this trend?
-
The Honda e has similar flush door handles for the driver and front passenger, and I've read from some owners they can freeze in cold weather, making getting into the car difficult. I can only imagine what JLR spec ones are like! What's wrong with with a normal handle? Aside from the 0.01% aero benefit, of course.
-
Tesla have similar and had to recall for small heaters to be fitted as they were freezing locked, as mentioned.

These were the best. Didn't stick and would skewer errant pedestrians.

Also able to be unlocked with a screwdriver...

I even managed to unlock an old Ford with my fingernail!

Looks just like my garage door lock.

Just another pointless ‘innovative’ design idea. By the millennium cars had been more or less perfected design wise, manufacturers now just try and invent new things that aren’t even needed. A million sensors for pointless gadgets, too many electronics… all you need is a radio and heater.
-
The one newish innovation I would miss is traffic. Quite a few times I've avoided lengthy holdups via advance warning.

Replacing the wing mirrors with cameras (as on the Honda e) will provide a much bigger benefit to the aerodynamics than the flush door handles. I also recall reading that door handle problems made a significant contribution to Tesla's poor reliability ratings.
-
Whilst perhaps a bigger aero benefit, cameras for door mirrors are in my opinion a pointless feature - the image on a screen is not going to be as good as looking at a door mirror, surely?! And the screens on the edges of the dashboard are in an unusual position to glance at when driving. Maybe we need to concentrate on the basics and not apply tech to cars for the sake of it (touch screen HVAC controls?!).

To begin with, you may wonder why a car like the Honda e, which has a streamline like a sea container, should be equipped with these cameras and flush door handles...

I've seen the E pseudo door mirrors and they are not as good as quality mirror glass. Especially for reversing where you need good visibility.
Cameras are affected by flare under some lighting conditions.
-
They have made accessories for cars as long as they have made cars. Many have been useless. Here's one that had its time and place

My brother had a Mazda like that.

Talking of Tesla woes, now steering wheels are falling off :

I hadn't even noticed them, but since you pointed them out, see them all the time now.
