Looking to buy an MK1 CVT - Judder ?
« on: October 10, 2019, 10:39:59 PM »
Hi there !
I am looking at several nice low milage MK1 CVT in my area but was put off by the amount of posts regarding a shaking transmission upon acceleration, and the frequent fluid changes.

How bad and common is this really ?
I know it's still a drivable reliable car, but if I am a perfectionist, is it better to steer for the manual ?

Fluid changes are every two years or 25,000 miles. Not really a hardship. If you buy a car that is shudder free, change the fluid once you get it, and follow the service intervals, you should have no issues. Remember, Mk1 manual gearboxes are renowned for bearing failures. Mine cost £324 to have a specialist put right.

I would add that the Honda recommended 4 years / 50k miles CVT fluid change for the Mk 1 Jazz and the Mk 2 CVT up until about 2013 when it was realised that that the CVT judder problems were caused by too much accumulated muck and the recommended change interval was halved for the Mk 2 Jazz. Those aware of the problem and solution probably also use this recommendation for the Mk 1 but I suspect that the majority of Mk 1 Jazzes are serviced by 3rd party mechanics following the schedule in the handbook.
