Title: Washer Bottle Leak?
Post by: gtd2000 on July 30, 2019, 09:00:49 PM
The GF complained that her windscreen washers were not working today so I said I'd have a look. She advised that there was no sound of the skooshers working and she thought the motor had gone...

Anyway, it turned out that the pump was working fine, I added some water and everything was back to normal.

She also advised she had topped up the washer bottle the other day and said she couldn't understand why they were empty.

I thought she was just getting old ;)

We went into town and parked up the car, when we returned there was a puddle of water under the car. AC had been on and thought it's possible it might just be from that....

Anyway, we went out in my car this evening and returned to see a nice trail of water and pooling on the road underneath the drivers side headlamp.

Looks like the water is definitely leaking out!  >:(

Is the water bottle known for leaking or is there some sort of union that may have failed?

Any answers/suggestions, greatly received  :D

Thanks for that Jocko.

Loks like I'll probably need to drop the watter bottle out to inspect it properly.

I'm guessing undertray and wheel arch cover removal to do that?

Could be a reservoir seal or split pipe near the pump, the head of water will push through the pump and ooze out.

I'll see if I can get a decent look at it tomorrow and report back once I've found the problem.

You're not alone. Mine's leaking from one of the pipes (13 on Jocko's diagram) but some water gets through. Like you I noticed water under the wheel arch.

Hi
You will find it is a real pain to get to the bolt that is nearest to the front of the car. The water bottle is held by 2 10mm bolts underneath and one bolt next to the fill cap. It can be removed whole but you have to twist and turn the bottle, however the fill portion can be twisted and pulled and it will separate from the bottom portion. Mine was leaking from the base of the rear motor housing.

Here's a pic of the washer bottle with the front bumper removed, this may help you.

Well the car is jacked up,the sun is out.

Rear binding brake disc sorted, oil dropped.

Time to investigate the washer bottle!

Leaking from the front pump....

I've attempted a repair by blocking up the bottom part of the pump. Will try to source a replacement in the meantime.

Was leaking out the bottom of the pump here as far as I could tell:

Decided to pack it with neoprene and add some bathroom sealant in the shape of a walnut whip!

Will fill up tomorrow and test.

I see you can buy cheap Chinese replacements but no idea of quality:

I have had to replace the front washer pump one twice now.

All bought on eBay, only last about 2-3 years but there not much more that £7 ish anyway. If its the only thing that goes wrong with the car i don't mind  :D :D

But should I go for the £2 version and live dangerously?  :P

Jonathan

Did yours stop working or was it the same as mine, where it started leaking?

I'm just going to head out to the car and fill up the washer bottle and see if the "walnut whip" repair method made any difference....  ;D

Mine stopped working.

Maybe your washer pump has come loose from reservoir slightly....

Didn't appear to be loose but I'm leaving the washer bottle filled up overnight as a test.

If it's still full in the morning I'll do a check of the pump and see if that starts the leak again.

It looked like it was coming from the bottom of the pump, rather than the opening to the bottle but will verify tomorrow.

Water level constant overnight, presumably this means there's no problem with the pump seals or connection to water bottle.

Gave the washers a good blasting and all working fine.

Refilled the water bottle to the top to see if there's any drop in water level.

Fingers crossed!  ;)

All appears to be OK with the pump for now.

Popped into SCB in Edinburgh today (I was dropping a pal off at the airport) and picked up a used water pump for the princely sum of £2.

They had two or three Jazz's in for breaking and on two of them, the water bottles were already exposed.

That spare will be put into the tool box, until needed.  ;)

Next job will be fitting new discs and pads at the weekend.... Fingers crossed for dry weather, should be here tomorrow afternoon.

GF ordered a full set of front and rears for £62 delivered on eBay.
