Title: Brake light bulb - which one?
Post by: richardfrost on May 12, 2021, 11:27:59 AM
My lad has messaged to say he has a brake light out. Without the car or manual here I don't know how to find the right bulb as I don't trust online stores. Halfords for example just lists a ton of bulbs.

Is it a 21W/5W combination bulb?

Also, is it easy to fit?

Many thanks.

That's a standard side light/ brake light bulb. Bayonet fitting. You will see that the bayonet fittings are set at different "heights"on the body so make sure you put it into the bulb holder the correct way round.

Whenever I've a job to do, I have a look on Youtube to see if there is a tutorial.  :D

Aurobulbs Direct lists the bulb as a 380 wedge bulb,  and so does Halfords, also called a W21/5W

I told him to buy this one...

He'll be home soon so I can get the duff one out and check before we open the new one. Looks the same though.

And @Westy36 - thanks. I had been watching that video earlier and it made me realise it's a dual filament bulb. That save a wasted day trying to fit the wrong one.

No worries. It's what I do to whenever anything comes up. Someone, somewhere has done it before!  :D

Not a bayonet actually. It's a push in bulb and can be inserted either way round.

Made the lad do it himself so he knows how to do it next time. Teach a man to fish and all that.

Yes.
Didn't realize that they made double filament capless bulbs.
Just goes to show how long ago it is since I last bought one, and now I have the Crosstar, all the lights are led except for the rear coloured trafficators, and sods law says they are the only ones I don't have.

Bizarrely, just short of a year on, another one has blown. Can't remember if it's the same side or the other one.

I told him he must be braking too much  :D

... or sitting at traffic lights on the pedal instead of using the handbrake  ;D

Forgot to say, this strategy worked. Made him do it last time, did it himself outside Halfords this time. I taught him to fish!

I know replacing a rear bulb on a Jazz Mk1 doesn't make him (or me) a mechanic, but it's a start. He even managed to replace the battery on his partner's Peugeot 208 last week when Halford's couldn't do it! The power of Youtube.

I always use osram or bosch, not much more than unbranded and I find they definitely last longer.

I get mine from amazon.

Japanese vehicles quite often use capless/wedge bulbs (lamps). Cheap to manufacture and no wasted superfluous metalwork compared to bayonet.
